My Problem
The hard drive was failing
My Fix
Repair took about an hour. Suction Cups, torn screwdrivers and tweezers made it a breeze.
My Advice
Hardest part was understanding that the sync cable itself had to be pulled out. I kept trying to pull on the "black part" thinking it was the connector that had to be removed from the board. Might want to make that more clear in the directions!
My Problem
I wanted to repair this myself to learn how to do it, and because i am not impressed with the apple store located in the Florida mall. The people that work there seem to have an attitude, and I do not trust them. Also, they wanted the password to my computer, I told them that was none of their business. If they were replacing the power supply they did not need the password. I told them this, and they acted like they were know it all's Also in the past they installed the incorrect memory in my imac, it did not boot, and they said there was a problem with the logic board. I took it home, replaced the memory myself, and it worked fine. I reaiized they were not as professional as they claim to be. When you try and discuss repair issues, they get this strange attitude I don't care for.
My Fix
The repair went fine, followed the instructions exactly. The supplied suction cups and torx driver worked great. It took about one hour, everything went back together well. The only difficult part was connecting the small ribbon cable located at the upper left side behind the lcd panel. I used some tweezers to get the cable started in the slot, then pressed it in with my thumb. Its easy to damage this small ribbon cable, so I took extra time with it.
My Advice
I would recommend having a helping hand when doing this job. It makes it easier to hold the imac rigid when removing or installing the parts.
My Problem
The hard drive had S.M.A.R.T errors
My Fix
I followed the instructions from iFixit on taking the iMac apart and managed to replace the hard drive.
The new hard drive was the same size and model from the same manufacturer that I got in Compusa.
The tools I got from iFixit really worked in the way described.
My Advice
After replacing the hard drive the iMac starting having a loud noise due to high RPMs in the fan.
I got HDD Fan Control (http://www.hddfancontrol.com) and after installing it the noise disappeared.
My Problem
The original 1 TB Seagate drive failed so I upgraded to a 2TB and added 128 GB SSD.
My Fix
Very easy with the proper tools. It was difficult to know how the LED driver board cable disconnected from the LCD... just pull the ribbon cable straight out!
My Advice
The computer is incredibly responsive and fast with the SSD! I highly recommend this option. As you can tell from my photo, I am a bit of a nerd :) .
My Problem
My iMac which I own for almost 5 years went dead during a power surge. After spending some time online I suspected that it needed a new power supply, and your site was most helpful.
My Fix
The repair went very well. The instructions were clear and easy to follow. It took me about 2 hours to have it fixed.
My Advice
It's important to have all required tools. It saves a lot of time. When attaching the screen back, put the four screws back into the holes first.
My Problem
My iMac 27 Inch i5 always frozen...
My Fix
Very well, I managed to happily. It 'just install "Fan control" fan set at maximum speed and the problem is solved!. For an excess of zeal, oh then apart my iMac 27 to carry out additional cleaning.
My Advice
No, nothing special
My Problem
The power supply of my Imac was broken
My Fix
My iMac is a 24" aluminum one, unfortunately there was no official guide on the website. However, there was a guide for changing the power supply in a 20" iMac, so I used that. There was also a video of the friendly lady, who made the repair look very easy. I also googled a bit about changing the power supply, but there was not much extra information about the subject.
Opening the iMac was easy, even as removing the screws and the right cables to lift off the lcd screen. But there was a difference between the 20" guide an my 24" iMac. When trying to lift off the lcd, there seemed to be 2 more extra cables connecting the lcd to the computer. It was hard to reach these cables and even harder to unplug them. I am not much into reparing computers and I was afraid to break anything. So I just let the cables and I put a screwdriver between the lcd and the computer, to keep it open.
Removing the power supply was a bit tricky; there was not much room for me to reach the right angle to unplug the cables attached to the power supply. After some wiggeling I was able to unplug it, and hook up the new powersupply.
Then it was just a matter of putting an the screws back in place, and put the glass plate back on. Quite a hassle to get it dust free. I was working in my attic where it is rather dusty and where my cat always comes to relax. So after putting the glass plate on and off for a few times to get it totally clean and hair free, I could finally start the iMac. The only thing I could hope for was that I didn't screw up my whole iMac. And then it started and I heard the heavenly mac tune. I was so relieved. And the new power supply seems to be working very well, so I fixed it correctly, without braking anything.
Now who is the biggest nerd! I am so proud of myself! And I just saved myself 400 euro's! Thanks so much iFixit!
My Advice
A walkthrough guide and movie for the iMac 24" would be nice.
My Problem
No problem -- I just wanted to upgrade to an SSD in the optical bay.
My Fix
The iFixit guide has you disconnecting and removing the display before getting to the optical drive. Halfway through I realized that that was a bit more work than i wanted to deal with and that there was enough room to get to the bay without removing the entire display...so that's what I did.
My Advice
Use your head when following the guides. They're good, but don't be afraid to examine what it is you're actually trying to do.
My Problem
Stuck DVD in imac drive just making noise like it was trying to eject but not
My Fix
Actually everything arrived the monday after ordering friday but after leaving the mac off for 2 days we started it up monday and grrrgrrrit the dvd poped out.
My Advice
Nope just keep it up.
My Problem
No power
My Fix
Fantastic. Replaced the power supply. Thanks ifixit!
My Advice
Paper cups are handy to keep all of the screws organized. A room with good lighting would have been nice.
