MacBook Air 5-Point Pentalobe Screwdriver

$12.95 Up to $17.95

Product code: IF145-090

Product Overview

Hidden deep within the MacBook Air lies a top-secret treasure map. Guarded by legions of miniaturized orcs, impenetrable moats, and cascading waterfalls of thermal paste is the map to Apple's most precious secrets…

Some say it's the list of future iPhone release dates. Others believe that it reveals the location of Jobs' secret lair. We at iFixit tend to believe that it is the rest of the Mayan calendar, printed on a graham cracker in Pig Latin.

If you manage to defeat the cuddle-sized orcs, vault across the mirky moat, and evade apprehension by the ensnaring thermal paste, you will require a specialized weapon to defeat the final foe: the 5-Point Pentalobular screw.

Your iPhone 4 Pentalobe Screwdriver will be useless against this final defender. Take up arms with our specially-forged MacBook Air 5-Point Pentalobe Screwdriver.

Compatible with 5-point torx-like fasteners used on MacBook Airs as well as many Toshiba drives. Includes swivel-top for ease of use. Not compatible with fasteners found on MacBook Pro batteries and iPhone cases.

The driver for the iPhone 4 can be found here: 5-Point iPhone 4 driver

My Problem

I have an old G4 12" Powerbook & an original aluminum MacBook that I wanted to update. The latter to be an iTunes server for the whole house.

My Fix

haven't got it all done yet, but the Drive replacement in the Original Unibody MB was simple

My Advice

Take your time, don't be in a hurry.

My Problem

There are no problem. I am doing a forensic job, I need to extract the hard disk. I bought here a pentalobe screwdriver topen the case.

My Fix

Fine! I can't upload a photo, beacuse the mac book is impounded by italian financial police, and I am still working on it. Sorry

My Advice

If you want to unlock the hard disk buy also a 2.9 torx screwdriver

My Problem

Client of mine must have decided her MacBook Air was having an issue getting out of sleep mode so she poured an entire mug of coffee on it. She kept trying to use it. Eventually it would not boot. Desperately needed the info from the 256GB SSD drive (of course had not backed up). Since the computer was fried she was going to have to buy a new MacBook Air anyway. They brought both machines to me to swap the old (hopefully still working) SSD into the new one for immediate access to the data.

Alas…

With all of the custom tools I have for Macs I DID NOT have this specific screwdriver.

TekServe and Mike's Macs were unwilling to let me borrow/rent/buy (and immediately give back) any of theirs. And they were only offering a 2 day turn-around (at best) for what is clearly a 20 minute max job.

I ordered this screwdriver for overnight delivery.

My Fix

Screwdriver was delivered at 10:20AM the next morning.

10 minutes later the new caffeine-free MacBook Air was good to go with her old SSD.

Client was ECSTATIC.

I was a hero.

Those NYC stores missed out on free money.

(the SSD is fine...that coffee mark on it was easily rubbed off)

My Advice

ifixit.com bookmark it.

My Problem

I had to order 10 pentalobe screwdrivers for my techs. The only hang up I had was that I wanted to use a corporate AMEX and it was a hassle to get the order shipped to our business instead of the billing address.

My Fix

Haven't done any with the tools yet.

My Advice

Make sure that you have the billing and ship to location the same or it will be a hassle.

My Problem

Trackpad issues .. Driving me INSANE

My Fix

Opened up the laptop (Screwdriver fit perfectly) , looseden the main screw holding the trackpad in ... issue of ghost clicking and dragging has now gone away.

My Advice

Dont be scared :) Easy as 1-2-3

My Problem

"someone" drop a cup of coffee on my macbook 11",

laptop was still on, but doing some crazy staff....

went to the apple store for a check up, didn't say what just happened...than a call few days later: "there is coffee all over the place, and the logic board has rust - it will 750$ to fix..."

My Fix

got the drivers - opened the cover , so the coffee all over the place...clean it - done.

saw the rust....used a tiny brush , and alcohol - rust off - very easy, closed - trun on - walla - as sweet as ever.

My Advice

when apple say something - don't run to their hands to fix it...maybe you can do this with www.ifixit.com

amazing!!!!

My Problem

Take bottom off 13" MBAir

My Fix

No repair done; just checked cables. Removing and resetting the screws went fine.

My Advice

Be careful, don't force anything. Double-check the feel. The screws take a fine touch to begin properly...you can cross-thread them VERY EASILY if not careful.

My Problem

Upgrading RAM

My Fix

Well, the 26bit driver kit works, but not well on the bottom case screws of a MBP. The slope of all the phillips bits is steep, while the screws on the bottom of a MBP have a shallow angle.

Once I got them open, easy as pie.

My Advice

Use one of the flathead bits for the bottom screws of a MBP.

My Problem

Needed to fix the cracking on the bottom

My Fix

Easy and flawless

My Advice

not really thank you! Just tightening up the screws.

My Problem

There is a special screw driver designed by Apple to open the MacBook Air from 2011/2012. It's called a 5-Point Pentalobe Screwdriver. It's in the shape of a star. I had a client that had a liquid damaged MacBook pro and I needed to open the bottom quick.

My Fix

A tiny flat head will strip the screws without fail! Since I didn't have the screwdriver on hand, I was able to borrow it from an associate technician who works for an ASP. I was able to salvage the board and remove the liquid from the interior before any major damage settled in. Needless to say, if my friend didn't come through I wouldn't have been able to save this board in time. So, don't let this happen to you. Order this screwdriver in order to prevent a corroded logic board in MacBook Air.

My Advice

Trust me, no local hardware store has this screwdriver. If you don't know a tech that works for Apple and will lend you his tools - buy this one!
