Heavy-duty Suction Cups (Pair)

$14.95

Product code: IF145-023-1

Product Overview

Have you ever wished that you had those microscopic hairs on your fingers that allowed Peter Parker to scale walls in the original Spiderman? Since, to our utter despair, none of us at iFixit were born with this semi-useful, highly-entertaining gift, our team got together and came up with some ideas…

After losing 4 employees to experiments with hazardous waste gone awry, and 9 leaving because of embarrassment of having hair transplants on their hands ($6 per graft was just too good to pass up), we came up with another idea… Heavy-Duty Suction Cups

Unfortunately, these suction cups max out at 15 lbs. each and we lost another 11 employees finding that out. (We're now hiring!) However, this makes these lever action suction cups ideal for lifting the glass off Aluminum iMacs and for gripping and lifting any smooth non-porous surface under that total weight of 30 lbs.

My Problem

Had a customer needing an iMac taken apart to put in a hard drive.

My Fix

It was very simple, and the suction cups were mandatory for this endeavor.

My Advice

The video that went with it explained the process. Pretty simple all in all.

My Problem

The original 320 Gb hard drive was failing coincidentally with the installation of Lion on the iMAC. It took a while to figure out that it was the disk that caused the profusion of pinwheels, and not Lion.

My Fix

I watched MJ's presentation on YouTube and ordered the tools I did not have to accomplish the repair. The 1122 is a bit different from the one in the video, as there are two ribbon cables and one four pin connector (labeled LCD temp) from the LCD to the computer electronics. It turned out that I could manage the bezel by just propping it up against the wall behind the computer, and after disconnecting the right hand ribbon (two screws) and the LCD Temp connector, I was able to stow the LCD against a cushion on the left of the computer, propping it up so there was no strain on the ribbon still connected. The most difficult operation of all was to free up the hard disk, as the upper clamp is formidable. In the entire operation I was able to fully access the disk without disconnecting the microphone or the Left hand ribbon cable to the monitor. The photo with the fan shows the LCD Temp connection, the middle one shows the right hand ribbon in place just beneath the middle sponge, and the right photo shows the businesss end of the right hand cable.

My Advice

As quiet as the iMAC is, I was indeed surprised to see two rather large fans once I removed the bezel.

My Problem

Ongoing Mobile repairs

My Fix

No repair guides attached to parts

My Advice

Use utube

My Problem

Old HDD was on it's way out. 5 years of goodness, though.

My Fix

Perfect. I followed an iFixit tutorial and it went as stated, even at 2am on Saturday morning after a long night of drinking.

Problems? Only with the thermaltake 3.5 to 2.5 adapter. The leatherman was key to bending the adapter in to shape. Is it bad? Nope. I'm sure half of the adapters on the market are plastic and won't bend. It's no biggie- just don't be shocked when you get there. Apple made their cables *just* the right length, so most adapters are prolly just slightly out of range.

My Advice

As with any computer repair:

1. Work slowly and attentively.

2. Ground (not to be confused with shock) yourself.

3. It's no lie. The screen will be dirty.

Oh- I hope you have your install DVDs. Apple has gotten schiesty about their optical media.

My Problem

I fixed it as my Mac runs everything entertainment wise in my house. When it stopped working, my local shop wanted $250 and 2 days to do the job but, after some searching, found iFixit and did it myself.

My Fix

I ordered the suction cups just in case and am glad I did as I don't know how I would have gotten the face of the iMac off. But the repair went so smooth following the online line guides. Start to finish in a lite over 1/2 hour!

My Advice

Do it yourself... And if you have an iMac, get the section cups

My Problem

To boost the power of my iMac 27" Mid-2010.

SSD 60Go for app, and HD 1To for files.

My Fix

Almost good, except I broke the DATA LCD connector on the logic board when removing the LCD. Had to buy the connector (only found one on eBay). and weld it (a pro. did it)

My Advice

Be carreful when removing cables from the LCD attached to the logic & mother board. It's pretty tricky.

My Problem

New hard drives in iMac.

My Fix

Easy as pie.

My Advice

These will come in handy again because the drive I got is already making death clicks and probably needs replacement. Such is life.

My Problem

I have had my iMac for almost 4 years and the internal WD hard drive went kaputt. The system was hanging often, sometimes for as long as an hour. I knew something was amiss. I had to run Apple Hardware Test on an extended test in order to come up with the hard drive failure error. I have an external clone backup which is updated daily, so, I was able to boot from that drive and use my computer as normal while I waited for the replacement drive and tools to arrive in the mail.

My Fix

Went swimmingly! I cleared off the coffee table in my living room and used the iFixIt app on my iPhone to guide me through the process, step-by-step. The entire process took maybe 1.5 hours, since I was being extra-careful. I used the dust blower to remove a lot of built-up dust bunnies inside the computer, and to blow any errant particles off the exposed screen.

My Advice

Stay grounded. No shuffling about on carpet in your socks while you perform iMac surgery. It was a pleasantly warm day where I live, so I ran around barefoot, and without a shirt on. I felt more like an auto mechanic than a computer geek. Oh, and if you still have the box your iMac originally came in, sticking the screen glass into the styrofoam molds in there is handy, as is putting the detached screen into the padded computer sleeve. Keep a lint-free cloth around, just in case you put a finger print on the screen. Try really hard not to, though.
