My Problem

The trackpad on my Macbook Pro stopped clicking and was acting erratically. The only way to get to it was to have the special Y or tri-wing precision screwdriver. So I ordered the bit driver tool kit. I tried to get the screws out with a regular flathead but they started to strip. Didn't want to chance it.

My Fix

I followed the tutorials from the web but it did not resolve my issue. I then realized a swollen battery and the adjustment screw (T6) wasn't the real issue. The real issue was my 3 year old pressing too hard on the trackpad while playing her preschool games. The two mounts on the top of the trackpad were bent inward. I bent them back into place by pushing the trackpad outward and the computer is as goods as new. Still needed the tool set and now have it for future use. For less than $20, you can't go wrong!

My Advice

Don't try and force these tiny screws if you don't have the right tool. BE PATIENT and get the proper tools. These particular precision screw drivers (Y shaped or tri-wing) are impossible to find in a brick and mortar.

My Problem

The Galaxy Tab was dropped from a car to the street, someone probably drove over it.

My Fix

The directions on the ifixit web site were not always clear since I've not done anything like this before. But I got through it!

My Advice

First remove the micro SD Card so it won't get damaged or interfere with the case removal. The directions were not clear that the clips are in the case and engage tabs on the motherboard, that's why you have to pry the case back to free them.

The directions stopped before separating the digitizer/screen from the LCD. I used a hobby knife to follow the adhesive and it separated easily. then I gently removed all the old adhesive from the LCD. The new digitizer/screen has adhesive in place so you just remove the separater sheet and put it all back together.

My Problem

I let one of my friends borrow my old set of screw driver bits and didn't remember which friend borrowed them.

My Fix

I guess this is just the really boring part. I just needed some new screw drivers since I couldn't find my old ones.

My Advice

You can't fix stuff if you don't have the tools to do it.

My Problem

The home button on my iPhone 4 was shady at best. Sometimes it would work without any problems and other times I could click it 20 times before anything would happen.

My Fix

The repair was lengthy to get the phone apart, but the reverse process was very simple and went off without a hitch. The only problem I ran into was the amount of glue holding on the glass front. In order to get any leverage to pry the front away from the metal case, I needed to give the front a little push from the inside. I obviously chose the wrong tool for the job and ended up with a small scratch on the back side of the glass that removed the black paint. Nothing a little sharpie couldn't fix, but a minor, whoops!

My Advice

Patience. If you happened to have an early iPhone 4, it will have a stupendous amount of glue on just about everything. Be patient with taking off the front screen and careful not to scratch the inside where the QR code is located. Although it is tempting to push the front away from the metal frame, you will likely end up scratching off the black paint, which will show through on the front of the phone.

My Problem

Delegated this one.

My Fix

Because it's my sons phone I decided to let an outside source repair it. $25 difference after postage and parts.

Love the tools though. Pretty slick. I work on small stuff (laptops) all the time. They'll be put to good use.

My Advice

Apple should have put real unbreakable glass in the iphone not "fictional" unbreakable glass. For something this expensive and hard to get to it was a either a bonehead design decision or a way to ensure additional income. Based on how many breaks have been reported I'd say they have some serious PR work to do.

My Problem

No instant problem at the moment, but reading on some Internet forums, I saw great reviews of the iFixIt products. Decided to go ahead and lay in a supply of these great tools.

The kits are beautifully / thoughtfully designed, and of excellent quality - thanks.

Besides that, I'm a tool nut!

My Fix

Sorry, nothing else to add.

My Advice

Sorry, nothing else to add.

My Problem

I needed a Christmas gift for our campus techs

My Fix

Will be used at school campuses for repairs

My Advice

None :)

My Problem

Basically, the new Mac Mini 2011 (core i5, 4gb ram, Radeon 6630) is a "real Mac", suitable for almost every purpose (not only SOHO).

I had nothing to complain about (even working with big libraries of Aperture), except for the hard disk (a 5400 rpm model), really too slow. In my normal use (I frequently must open/close several programs), I worked better with my iMac late 2009 (a 3,06 Core2 Duo, 4gb ram, which has a geek bench score of 4200, vs the 6900 of the MacMini!) mainly because of the 7200 rpm hd

My Fix

I changed the original hd with a new ssd sata 3 (by OCZ) and installed 8gb ram (before was only 4).

I really had no problems in doing that. Thanks to the iFixit tools, in about 40 min completed my job

My Advice

Thanks to the guides provided by iFixit, I think that this job is in everybody's reach.

You spend almost 200 bucks (for the ssd and the memory upgrade), but with a huge improvement in performance (the booting time is astonishing, the programs open instantly, and so on)

My Problem

Suspecting too much thermal goop on stock heatsink

My Fix

Went well, the iFixit tools were great but some of the bits were very hard to take out since the angle was tricky

My Advice

I don't think the bits have to fit so tight in the plastic holders since the case covers the whole thing when closed

My Problem

My screen cracked and before buying the replacement lcd, I wanted to make sure I could take the phone apart and put it back together

My Fix

I was able to completely dissemble and reassemble the phone, now its time to order the screen! The tool kit was very helpful, magnet feature proves useful. And the case can be used to store screws while your working. Thanks ifixit!

My Advice

After I get the replacement sreen, id say if you don't have a warranty, why spend hundreds of dollars for a repair you can do yourself for less?
