My Problem
My three plus year old iPhone 4 seemed to be holding charge well enough, but attempts to charge were hit-or-miss. It would often take several plug-unplug cycles to get it charging, and unplugging the charger often resulted in a crash. There were also random crashes during normal operation.
My Fix
The repair was surprisingly easy. Removing the battery took a little more force than expected, but I was careful to increase gently to avoid breaking anything. Upon removal, I noticed what was I think was adhesive that was what needed undoing. Installation and re-assembly were easy. The old phone is stable again.
My Advice
Don't hesitate! I spent at least a month with an unstable phone driving me nuts. Consider using a small dark-colored tray (I used a shallow black box) for the repair to better keep track of the tiny screws, and be sure your device and tools are in place, and you have access to the online tutorial (a careful reading before starting is helpful).
