How to replace your iPhone 5 battery

15 minutes - 1 hour

Moderate

My Problem

My iPhone 5 battery was dropping 40-50% of its charge within an hour or so. After driving 70 miles to the nearest Apple store, they confirmed it was the battery not a software issue. $80 to replace an 18 month old battery, wasn't going to happen. So I came to iFixit after hearing about them on numerous podcasts over the years.

My Fix

The disassembly was surprisingly simple. Everything went smooth. The only challenge I had was reconnecting the ribbons to the display. They popped off so easily, I didn't realize I need to hear a little click to know they were seated properly again. Over all it took about 45 minutes beginning to end. This includes disassembling and reassembling a second time because I didn't have all the ribbons connected.

My Advice

When reconnecting make sure the ribbons are seated in. They don't just lay on the board. You'll know they are connected best when there isn't a struggle for the cover to stay on when you screw it on.
