My Problem

Problem 1. - President of the company gets his iPhone 4s wet and has never backed it up. There are pictures on the phone that he must have. Unit has dried out but won't stay powered up when using the USB cable connected to a PC.

Problem 2. Admin Asst has dropped or thrown her iPhone 4 and cracked the screen.

My Fix

1. Following advice from the iFixit forums (thanks, everyone!) I replaced the battery in the 4s. This got the unit to stay powered up when connected to the computer. Unfortunately, I am still working on getting the pictures off the phone (it is in recovery mode when connected) but the battery swap was easy enough once I purchased the repair kit that supplies all the tools you need along with the battery. Following the ifixit guides was a huge help and covered every step with easy to follow instructions and pictures.

2. Much more detailed and nerve wracking repair. Lots of teeny tiny screws to keep track of and restore to the proper locations. Took over an hour in total and required a lot of patience and attention to keep track of all those parts. The procedures required both a firm and gentle touch to remove glued in parts without breaking any delicate connections or boards. Felt very proud when I put everything back together and had no leftover screws and the unit powered up without error.

My Advice

1. Use the forums for help and tips.

2. Take your time, use the proper tools, keep screws separated from each other - you must put them back in their original location, they are not interchangeable.
