Moderate

My Problem

At least the left fan on my Macbook Pro Early 2008 (1260) -- which was otherwise in great condition, started whining. Pretty embarrassing in a meeting. Since I had to open up the case anyway, I decided to to replace both fans. Purchased both from iFixit, which arrived in two business days.

My Fix

Follow directions in the iFixit guide carefully, and the repair will be easy, even though categorized as "moderate" in difficulty. It took about 1/2 hour to replace both fans (I intentionally made it a "slow" repair). The replacement fans are almost noiseless, and the repair cost ($50 per fan) was well worth the investment.

My Advice

Take your time, and make sure to separate out the various screw types in sequence to their removal (it makes putting everything back together very easy). Be very careful (for this model MBP) about *not* mistaking the the HDMI port screw hole for the proper case screw hole. I did this in my first repair (HD replacement) and I couldnt' remove the screw...it finally worked its way out on its own (and fell to the bottom of my case). I took to heart iFixit's caution to be very careful to not lift the keyboard too quickly (you'll easily damage the keyboard/logic board ribbon cable) --- and was glad I did. Thanks, iFixit for a great repair guide. I'd highlight with yellow circles rather than red against a dark background, Otherwise, perfect.
