My Problem
One night my iphone 4 was charging on my nightstand whilst I slept. It started emitting smoke. The smell woke me up. I unplugged it and found that it was no longer able to charge. Took it to the Apple store and their "geniuses" told me I must have gotten it wet--Wrong! They also said it would cost more to fix it than it would for me to use my upgrade without even taking it apart or doing diagnostics on it (aside from plugging it in to confirm it wouldn't charge). This was also wrong. So very, very wrong. The part I needed to replace (dock connector) was 30$. I threw in an extra battery for good measure.
My Fix
This was my first time taking apart an iphone. It was a little daunting, but your online guides and youtube video really helped. The phone is working fine and is fully charged. Thanks.
My Advice
Don't listen to Apple geniuses. They are worthless and are employed as salespeople, more than mechanics. Fix it yourself! You can do it!
