Product Overview

Will It Break?

First Scenario: On your way home from work, a Prius cuts you off. The Prius driver then settles into the MPG-maximizing 55 MPH. Enraged, you pull up next to him and roll down your window. Looking for the nearest projectile, you reach for your iPhone 3G, then pause to ponder: Will It Break?

Second Scenario: You've gathered all the materials to build your secret lair, but don't have a hammer. Your MacGyver-like intellect puts together that your iPhone 3G—with it's tough glass case—should do the trick. You raise your 3G high overhead for that first swing, then stop and wonder: Will It Break?

Final Scenario: The apps in the App Store just don't entertain you anymore. So you decide to make your own: iBouncyBall. Holding your 3G above the pavement, you stop to ask yourself: Will It Break?

If you answered "No" to any of these questions, you'll most likely need a new display assembly, which includes the touchscreen glass, integrated digitizer, LCD, ear piece speaker, and home button. Apple has designed the assembly to work as a unit, so replacing individual parts is extremely difficult, and you'll probably want to replace the entire display assembly if any part of it breaks.

NOTE: This part will not work for the iPhone 3GS, but this one will.

My Problem

So, I had this old iPhone 3G back from 2007 that I gave to my mother, but a couple of years ago I happened to fall while skiing on the Alps and the display got damaged (it had an expanding stripe of broken pixels) by the shock and/or snow getting inside. Apart from that, the battery didn't last as long as new, so I finally decided to take it apart and give it a good fix!

My Fix

Removing the display assembly was really easy, apart from the last cable (I missed the bit of the guide about having to open the plastic clip before removing the cable!). I also found that the right screwdriver to remove the screws was the Philips #000, at least for me (whereas in all guides they recommended a Philips #00). Replacing the battery was much more fiddly, but in the end I made it. If I should do that again, it would be much easier than the first time.

My Advice

Be careful not to break the golden ground pin on the side when removing the motherboard.

My Problem

This was a simple fix of the glass being broken.

My Fix

I bought the replacement glass. I thought it was strange that the adhesive didn't come with it. Anyway, after replacing the glass, the digitizer didn't work. It appeared that the cables didn't come with the pads that keep them in place. So I was attempting to solve that when I apparently clobbered the LCD. Now the screen was blank white with a few streaks of red and blue. So, I ordered the display assembly with glass, LCD, and digitizer. Now the screen is black. When I tried the original parts, the screen is black also. I've purchased a used iPhone (from Ebay. Still waiting) to test the parts against.

My Advice

For a quick fix that I've done a few time before, this one turned sour. But, my motto is "never say die". I will follow up when I get the used iPhone.

My Problem

The home button on the phone was not working.

My Fix

the repair went a bit bananas at the begining. I replace the part and one of the internal cables was not doing good contact so i could not use the slide functionality on the screen. I reopen the iphone and connect carefully the cables again. Then it works.

Iphone 3g works like new.

I can see that the screen is not the same type as the original one but it work so i will survive.

My Advice

it si a challenge but it was fun.

My Problem

Broken display on 3gs 32g & 3g 8gb iphone

My Advice

My use fixiit guide :-)

My Problem

iPhone shared but, returned destroyed… It come back entirely striped and dug by shock. And fissured screen.

My Fix

I entirely dismounted it and reassembled, without any problem.

My Advice

The problem is solved, it acted as you said, it was a simple problem of connection.

My Problem

had a shattered glass panel, tried to fix it with some cheap replacement piece of **** i bought from ebay resulting in corrupting the entire display. ordered the display assembly got it 2 (!) days later and replaced it - problem solved.

My Fix

smoothly! 5 min

My Advice

dont buy from shady ebay shops, buy in haste repent a leisure

My Problem

Battery life was fading after 2 1/2 years of service. And the other Iphone had a malfunctioning display (pixellines)

My Fix

Replaced battery on one Iphone 3G and display assembly on another. All went flawlessly thanks to the great write up!

Ended up with one extra screw that fell out of one of the Iphones. There aren't any missing so I suppose this one rolled around somewhere in the enclosure...

My Advice

For easy reassembly I printed out the layout with the location of the screws and placed every removed screw on the layout in the spot on the picture where it came out of the iphone.
