The trackpad had become unresponsive to both touch and click.
Had iFixit not had a very clear guide to replacement, I would not have undertaken the work myself. Kudos also to the designers at Apple-a very elegant and straightforward unit.
I was repairing my work notebook, and couldn't afford the downtime associated with sending it to a repair shop, so I was properly motivated.
It went quite well, but taught me a bit about the importance of patience, particularly in the reconnection of different types of connectors.
The Spudger is invaluable.
Be careful with the Spudger in disconnecting the smaller plugs from the logic board. Popping a socket off the logic board is a costly mistake.
Getting the logic board out in Step 22 involved using the Spudger to gently lift the board in a way that pried and lifted the speaker out of its recess. Patience is required not to bend it too much or apply too much force to get the board out.
The hardest step for me was getting the keyboard ribbon cable (removed in Step 17) firmly back into the ZIF socket. Manipulating the retaining flap to get the ribbon in straight (with the help of the Spudger), and to then push it in a flat plane to get it all the way home without bending was tricky. A cheap hands-free magnifier helped.
Putting the screws in little bowls, muffin tins, or an ice cube tray can help in not losing any. Working on a soft surface that keeps loose screws from bouncing off the table also helps. If all else fails, a magnet on a stick will help retrieve lost screws (even the SS ones are magnetic.)
Consider replacing the battery at this time. I did it for performance reasons, but another would be that two of the three the plastic screw tabs on the battery that hold it to the case were broken (over-tightening at the factory, shock over time?) I've seen this on a couple of MacBookPros.

The battery, she just wouldn't hold a charge like she used to. So I went my usual route -- the big Internet behemoth named after a South American rain forest. Wow, was that ever confusing. No-name replacement batteries, varying voltages and watt-hour specs, reviews that were all over the place, including diverging opinions on which screwdrivers to use for my MacBook Pro... I went searching elsewhere (here) and I'm glad I did.
From finding what I needed, including the EXACT correct screwdriver, quickly and easily, the whole process was great. Got the new battery and screwdriver, opened the package (good packaging, too, no annoying air bags that I had to pop and throw away -- I was able to recycle the whole thing!) and opened my computer and had the whole thing replaced in less than 15 minutes. The battery lasts just like new and I couldn't be happier.
The bottom line -- when it comes to specific Apple replacement parts, I won't go anywhere else now. I may have paid $5 more than I would somewhere else, but I know the battery is going to work in my machine and the hassle factor is 0!
When you're taking the bottom of your computer off, just go slow, get a piece of paper and as you take each screw out, put it in a matching place on the paper. Makes it super easy to find the exact right screw to go back in its original hole. Makes it hard to go wrong (unless your repair session is interrupted by a herd of wild dogs, but then you have more serious problems...)

The battery of my 15" old MacBook Pro Mid 2009 was pretty much done after 4.5 years and getting a new battery for on older MBP model isn't that straight forward as you may think. Lots of cheap knockoffs and fakes.
I got all the information, tools (just a Pentalope P6) and a better battery with higher mhA than the original on ifixit.com and everything was delivered only 2 days later! I was prepared for at least a week since I am from Europe.
Repair went without any problems. I read the according guide on ifixit.com several times before doing it.
Everything including removal of the old HDD and installing a new SSD was done in 10 Minutes.
My old trusted MBP mid 2009 got a huge performance boost and the new battery works perfectly (6-8 hours easily).
I saved $3.000 I was about to drop for the latest MBP retina but I read about the LG / Samsung panel problems Apple is using for the new models and decided to upgrade my old MBP instead.
Read the ifixit.com guides carefully and repeatedly. It will help a lot. Don't buy cheap knockoff parts from ebay / amazon, look on ifixit.com first. It will save you money, time and a lot of headache.

Wife's battery was showing a message that it needed to be replaced and her computer was running dirt slow.
The repair was a cake walk following the repair guide on the site. I also was able to clean out a bunch of dust bunnies :).
This is a pretty easy install, but just pay attention to the VERY tiny screws. 3 are long and the rest are so tiny that if you dropped them on a rug you would be on your hands and knees for a while hunting.

Apple uses a very unique screw head to hold the battery in the Mac Book Pro. It probably was designed to make it difficult to replace with third party battery. Replacement took about 10 minutes with screw driver from Ifixit.
Made replacement very easy
Don't be intimidated by opening the back on your Apple and replacing parts from third party vendors….its easy and saves money and time if you brought to an Apple store

My ~7000 mAh battery had depreciated down to ~3000 on a machine that cannot effectively use battery saving mode due to screen flicker and other defects.
On the verge of the Haswell line being released in late June (20? 22?..) I nearly caved for battery life convenience, and other minor things- the truth was that my machine has been more than powerful enough to code, write, read, view media with and will continue to be for a very long time... and this year's machines won't be necessary.
With this tool it went perfectly, with others from amazon and generic toolsets I wasted two weeks trying to speed up ship time and fix time, stripping my screws somewhat.
Despite stripped screws this driver still worked finely.
DO NOT USE SIX POINT OR OTHER SCREWDRIVERS. also I recommend finding Philips screws to replace all those inside your Mac, I'll be finding ways to do that this year.

My Sammy 830 SSD was very unstable in my 2009 July MacBook Pro 15", although it worked fine in my PC. I read that interference can be caused by the SSD on poor quality SATA cables
Repair was easy following the video guide. I didn't disconnect the battery, which was recommended, but results are perfect.
Don't think twice. The fix worked like a charm
