My Problem
Laptop's original optical drive wouldn't release disks, but functioned correctly (ie burned and read CDs/DVDs), so I got a replacement from iFixit.
My Fix
Installation was a snap, thanks to your clear directions. Upon testing the new drive CDs would burn, but DVDs wouldn't, so I called iFixit and am awaiting a replacement drive. Thanks, iFixit!
My Advice
iFixit is the I.T. do-it-yourselfer's best friend. As far as the installation, the guides say it all, but my additional advice is to line up the parts and screws in the order of removal, so that you have a clear idea of the reversal.
My Problem
The SuperDrive on my G4 laptop started sounding like fingers scraping on a chalkboard. I knew it was a matter of time before I was going to lose a cd or dvd in it.
My Fix
Repairs went very smoothly except for two items: 1. finding the recommended #00-1 phillips screwdriver. The #00 from my Craftsman tool kit was way too big, so I borrowed a #000-0 from a friend who builds a lot of items in miniature. A spudger is basically a wooden popsicle stick. Once all the proper tools were located, the job is pretty straight forward. The new drive went in very easily, and has worked quietly and flawlessly. Instructions were very good, and I just used my iPad to display them while I worked on the G4.
My Advice
There was one issue that I would recommend adding to the instructions: After the keyboard has been removed, it is a good idea to mark the position of the PRAM battery before using the spudger to remove it. If is not placed exactly where it was, the keyboard will not reinstall properly. Also, to make sure that all the screws go back into their appropriate positions, I used a small 10-holed plastic painter's mixing palette to keep the screws separate, and in order, one hole for each step where screws were removed. Tweezers were also a huge help in holding onto the very tiny screws.
My Problem
The optical drive stopped working so I decided to shift it. I had a hard time finding a replacement, but found it on iFixit together with an install guide.
My Fix
With the help of install guides on iFixit for RAM and hard drive I had learnt how to disconnect the MacBook Pro. Quite easy actually. The new drive works great.
My Advice
A magnetic bowl for the screws are a good tip and a magnet to make the screwdrivers magnetic to make them hold the screws when unscrewing them and taking them to the bowl and when putting them on place again to fasten them is another tip. I used my fingernails instead of a spudger when lifting up the keyboard.
My Problem
A few parts have gone bad and Apple will no longer fix my computer. Internal power supply and Optical drive. Upgrading to leopard so i boosted the RAM to 2gb.
My Fix
All repairs went very smooth, the repair guides were the key to my confidence. Thanks for everything.
My Advice
For anyone who is as shook as i was before i opened and started poking around in my IMAC G5 1076. Dont sweat it! Its a big LEGO set. A big expensive LEGO set so with a little patience and advise from IFIXIT youll be back up and running in minutes.
My Problem
My Fix
Nervioso al principio... Pero si eres MUY METÓDICO, no eres un manazas, y sigues al pie de la letra las guías, la reparación se hace sencilla y rápida... Yo tardé alrededor de una hora y ningún problema...
My Advice
Gran Descubrimiento
