My Problem

I had received the Macbook free from my sister because the screen wasn't working properly. You could only read it at certain angles. My sister had gone to Apple to see if they could fix it, but it was going to cost $300 dollars. So, I got the broken computer. I did some research, found iFixit and was extremely surprised to see that I could possibly fix it for about $20. The info on the site made it easy to diagnose the problem. I ordered the part I needed and waited.

My Fix

Two days later, my packaged arrived in perfect condition. I immediately set to work and an hour and a half later my Macbook was again fully functional. The Guide on installing the inverter cable was easy to understand and the process went smoothly.

My Advice

Take apart the Macbook first to see the inside before ordering/installing the part(s). I did this and I am glad I did. Otherwise I would have ordered the wrong part. Plus I got familiar with the inside making the actual install much smoother and easier. Oh, and go to iFixit before you go to Mac, you might just save $280.

My Problem

My Mac Book display was only working at certain angles. I had to wiggle the screen to find just the right angle in order for things to show up on the display. I was contemplating buying a new Mac laptop.

My Fix

The repair was long, about 1 1/2 hours. The steps to get to the inverter cable were numerous. But, the repair guide on the website was spot on. The instructions were 100% accurate and easy to follow. I was relieved and proud of myself when I powered up the Mac Book after the repair and the screen works at all angles. I bet I saved about $200 doing this repair myself.

My Advice

For the steps that involved removing screws, I numbered paper muffin cups with the step number and placed the screws in the appropriate muffin cup. There are literally dozens of screws that are removed during the process. They are of differing sizes and need to be put back in their correct place. Don't lose track of the screws. Also, make sure you have a good light source and a jewelers type phillips screw driver. A magnate helps as well.

My Problem

I have a white Macbook and the screen was flickering on and off when I moved it.

My Fix

Very smooth. Took a bit of patience as there are many screws, but the guide was great and the process was fairly simple.

My Advice

Just group the screws and keep notes. They're too many :D I got one extra at the end :P It's ok, they're redundant :p

My Problem

The screen for the Macbook would only stay on when open at specific angles.

My Fix

I followed the step-by-step repair guide, and everything went very smoothly.

My Advice

One thing I did to help keep myself organized was anytime I removed a screw or small piece from the computer, I put it into a small paper cup labeled with the number of the step from which it was removed. That way when I was putting it back together, I didn't have a jumble of screws to sort through.

My Problem

My Santa Rosa macbook had the classic problem of a screen which went dark when opened to about 90 degrees. I looked it up online and found out what the problem was: converter cable gone west. I got a quote from a recommended Mac repair outfit here in the UK - it was going to cost (gulp) £140 plus VAT (20%); that's around 260 USD. So I went to ifixit, had a look at the repair instructions, put it off for another few months until I couldn't use the computer any more. Then took the plunge and bought the cable (a miniscule 19 USD + 10 postage) and waited patiently, meanwhile looking at the guide every now and again, and breaking out into a cold sweat.

My Fix

When it actually came to doing the repair I found the guide incredibly helpful. I particularly appreciated that the screw sizes are listed for every single one removed. I am: a woman, not a techie, don't work in computers, have no electrical/electronic knowledge. I followed the guide to the letter (this is very important) and successfully replaced my inverter cable. Yeah!

It took me several hours, partly because I was going very slowly and also because the person who assembled the mac had put some screws in so tightly (particularly in he hinges) that it took me ages to undo them.

My Advice

Get an empty egg carton or two and put the screws you remove in the sections and write the guide number on each section.

My Problem

First the hinge had a problem that would not stay upright it would go all the way back and was annoying to say the least. i thought at first it was just some loose screws and upon inspecting the insides with the helpfull tutorials, i saw the the clutch hinge was in fact broken from the rod, so i went ahead and ordered the hinge and the inverter cable(long story short i damaged the cable because i didn't know how to take it off and the screen was black when turning on). so after replacing both and reconnecting the camera cable, which wasn't working either when i bought the mac, all worked fine.

i can assume that my 450 dollar purchase increased in price after these fixed issues.

My Fix

after following all steps carefully and labeling all the screws i was able to fix my mac with little problems, i am now typing this on my macbook and everything is working like nothing happened

My Advice

only advice would be to be patient and follow the steps carefully, which are very useful, i have never opened a mac, let alone a laptop for that case, and this was my first laptop repair i ever made, and turned out successful.

My Problem

screen goes dark at certain times and would come on after playing around with it like opening and closing the lid slowly and at a certain angle. I replaced the inverter cable with the instructions on your web and it worked fine.....anyway i have to open it one more time as i have a problem now that the screen works fine the dvd drive is not so maybe i have done something wrong so i have to try and eliminate that problem but the overall help was great.........thanks the the site and its contributors..

My Advice

none that i can take credit for......

My Problem

Screen went black when screen was at open 80 degrees or greater.

My Fix

Very straight forward and easy when you take your time and follow along the step-by-step directions.

My Advice

Good quality screwdrivers make a difference when dissassembling and reassembling. I used zip-lock snack bags and a black marker to label each bag as "STEP __" to identify and store all screws in each step of the process.

My Problem

My screen would go black from time to time, and only opening and closing the lid several times would fix it.

My Fix

It was approximately two full hours of concentrated work, especially the reassembly of the display took awhile, but I got it together again. There is a little more damage to the plastic rim than before the repair, but it still looks quite pretty for a more than 4 year old.

My Advice

I followed the repair guide strictly, and that did the thing. No surprises and a great feeling when it boinged again and the screen lit up...

My Problem

Screen on my macbook would go dark unless it was at just the right angle.

My Fix

Very involved but went smoothly.

My Advice

Put the screws in plastic baggies and label then with the step number.
