Apple has substituted the two bottom Phillips screws near the dock connector with 5-point "Pentalobular" screws.

This guide will illustrate how to replace the Pentalobe screws with good ol' regular Phillips screws.

Add Note Edit Step 1 — 5-Point Pentalobe Screws  ¶ 

  • Before we proceed, let's make sure you have the correct tools for the job.

  • iFixit's iPhone 4 Liberation Kit includes:

    • One 5-Point "Pentalobe" screwdriver

    • One #00 Phillips screwdriver

    • Two 3.6 mm "Liberation" Phillips screws

Add Note Edit Step 2  ¶ 

  • Use the Pentalobe screwdriver to remove the two 3.6 mm Pentalobe screws near the dock connector.

  • The 5-Point Pentalobe screwdriver should only be used a limited number of times because it has the potential to strip the screws.

Add Note Edit Step 3  ¶ 

  • Peel and remove the two 3.6 mm Phillips screws from the iPhone 4 Liberation Card.

  • Both the Phillips and Pentalobe screws are really small. How small? See for yourself (highlighted in the second picture).
