Introduction

If a faulty tuning machine on your Sterling by Music Man-StingRay Ray4HH Electric Bass is preventing you from tuning - it's time for a replacement.

This guide can be used to replace non-functioning tuning keys for your Sterling. Before starting the disassembly, make sure to acquire the correct tuning keys and type of string.

Steps 5 & 6 require the use of a drill- it is important to be aware of your environment and take caution.

Turn the tuning key counter-clockwise to the loosen string.
Only loosen the turning key(s) that need to be replaced.
Continue turning until there is slack in the string.

Cut the desired string with needle nose pliers.
Make sure the string has slack before cutting.
Remove the string by threading out through the bottom of the bass.

Use a Phillips #1 screwdriver to remove the four 9.53 mm screws.
Remove the broken tuning key.

Adjust the direction of the replacement tuning key as need.
Line up the screw holes of the tuning key to the existing drill holes on the bass.

Note the length of the tuning key securing screws to estimate the drill depth needed to drill into the headstock.
Drill new placement holes into the headstock using a 1/16" drill bit.
Drill in a level environment and be aware of surroundings.
Drill the holes straight down and centered with the tuning key screw holes.

Secure the four 9.58 mm screws using a drill with the Phillips #2 screwdriver bit.
Make sure the drill is not held at an angle to prevent the screws from stripping.
