Unfortunately, water damage is so difficult to determine how many parts are damaged (and which ones), that you are much better off getting a new one. Sorry, I wish I had better news.

I was 6' into a salt water swimming pool for about 10 seconds with the iPhone 3G in my pocket. Fortunately it was replaced within 24 hours but at full retail price. What if I was curious to learn on the damaged unit., what would be the top three components in priority order of replacement?

Put the mainboard into 2-propanol alcohol for at least 24 hours.
Then put it into fresh 2-propanol alcohol for another 5 hours.
Put it near (not on) a heater/radiator and wait another 24 hours.
(While waiting clean corroded contacts from the components in the housing/case with a toothbrush and 2-propanol - very gently, not like scrubbing your teeth!) :)
reassemble and pray. Good luck!

Apple now has a policy that they will repair or replace a water damaged unit for $200. Depending on the extent of your damage, you may want to look into that.

I guess they wont swap the unit, if the "Do not remove" Sticker is gone.
Is this sticker available as spare part? ;-)

Got mine plunged into the toilet (after the flush), almost dead. Tore it down, all smoothly dried up with cold air and smooth tissue. Then locked ot in a dry rice bowl for about one week, in order to suck out the remaining dampness. Plugged it to power, it was brought to life. The only part that passed away was the mic unit, which you can order for a mere $4. Good luck!

Put your iphone together with some catsand (without the screen) in a plasticbag and close the bag carefully....after that put the plasticbag in the freezer.... maybe you have luck and after 12hours you have a new icecold iPhone :)

got mine in a puddle for 5 minutes. i dried it but it seemed almost dead. i tried to swithc it off but without any luck. i left it on the sofa all night long, i was desperate because in italy it's very expensive. the morning after i woke up, i tried to turn it on, as the battery was dead, and it was reborn. only one thing's still damaged: the right speaker.

Iphone 3g in daughter's pocket when she got pushed in swimming pool. She tried turning it off and on. Nothing, Tried drying in rice, Nothing. I took it apart by your instructions and dried it out. Nothing. I purchased a new battery from IFIXIT, followed the great instructions and plugged into computer to sync. Itunes recognizes phone. I restored and set up as new phone many times and then finally it started working. After about 10 minutes the screen went dark, then phone turned off, back on, apple logo, then lighted blank screen. Now it just turns off, on, logo, lighted blank screen. Any suggestions as to what to replace next?

I dropped my new iphone 3GS in toilet bowl.. turned it off.. Turned it on the next morning and found the home button wasn't working at all.. Took the vacuum cleaner and sucked all the water from the i-phone.. saw droplets of water coming down the speakers.. Also, I put the i-phone in rice bowl.. M lucky !! it is working all fine now except every time I turned it on it says that the device attached is not made to work with apple and would you like to switch to Airplane mode.. Just press the cancel button twice and its working all fine....
