This is a simple short step-by-step to replace the date and time battery in the 5D2. Most people will only run into this problem after long-term not-using the camera w/o leaving an operation battery in it.


This is certainly a job you can do yourself, and it doesn't break any seal so it's even warranty-safe.

Just make sure you use a screwdriver that fits perfectly! otherwise you'll end up damaging those little screws.

Edit Step 1 Date and time battery  ¶ 

  • undo screw near the letter 'o' from 'open' that's indicated on the bottom left of the camera

Edit Step 2  ¶ 

  • Undo screw as indicated by the red arrow.

  • for this, you need to lift the rubber covers over the data connectors

Edit Step 3  ¶ 

  • now you can simply slide out the carrier for the 'Date & Time Battery'

Edit Step 4  ¶ 

  • now you have access to the battery.

  • The type is CR1616, 3V , lithium type, original brand as supplied by canon is Maxell.

  • Battery goes in with the +positive side down (as pictured)

To reassemble your device, follow these instructions in reverse order.
