My Problem
I was getting a red flashing light when trying to turn on the PS3.
My Fix
I had my laptop open to your repair guide and followed it step by step. I encountered a slight issue when removing the ground cable behind the power supply but just ended up loosening the screws. Another snag that I had was towards the end one of the screws that held the motherboard was screwed very tight and I ended up stripping the head. I was able to loosen it using a flat head and a lot of force. After that it was smooth sailing. Overall the process took about 2 Hours since I was being extra careful with the screws and also waiting for the motherboard to cool added to the time. But it was all worth it since my PS3 now is in working shape again :)
My Advice
The only issue as I mentioned is you may have to loosen the screws behind the power supply in order to free the ground cable. Also a nice Heineken would go well to quench the thirst while repairing. (It was a warm night)
My Problem
System got the yellow light of death during a firmware upgrade.
My Fix
Followed the instructions step by step. My system was a different model than the one used in the instructions but it was easy enough to figure out based on all the details in the guide.
My Advice
If you have a different model than the one used (mine had a different fan/heat sink configuration and the power supply was different. There are supplemental guides and youtube videos to fill in the gaps. All in all the ifixit kit and guide were very helpful and I was able to restore my ps3 and back up all of my data!
My Problem
I'd been unable to use my PS3 for several months due to YLOD. I tried the hair dryer fix and got about 20 mins of use out of it with that. Decided I should try this since it was more-likely to provide a long-term fix and save me the cost of a new PS3.
My Fix
This repair job was not difficult. I used a YouTube teardown video for the 80GB version of this model, as the layout is slightly different from the original model guide here on iFixit. Overall, the process was straightforward and made sense.

My Advice
Take care when putting the ground screw back in. It strips very easily.
You have to remove the power supply in this model in order to disconnect the blu-ray ribbon from the motherboard.
There are enough thermal pads included with the YLOD kit to replace them twice on this model, as it uses less than half as many as the original model fat PS3.
My Problem
I have a 2007 80gig fat PS3 that is backwards compatible. Once it got the yellow light of death I decided immediately to try to fix it because I didn't want to buy a new unit.
My Fix
As you can tell from the title, it didn't work. The instructions were great and I followed them to a T but I guess the PS3 had already taken its last breath.
My Advice
I recommend trying the repair as it was fun and I like seeing how it all went together. Just keep in mind that the fix is not a guarantee, more like a last ditch effort.
Good luck
My Problem
PS3 yellow light of death
My Fix
took several days. Reason is because I like to go over everything considering this was the first time, assembly was just a few minutes. I forgot two small tiny screws, not sure from where but I will find out once I open PS3 again to put the metal clip that is used for the security torx screw. This piece dropped somewhere, I didn't know it was so loosely held, I should have paid attention to the important notice on the guide.
My Advice
yes, pay close attention to the guide, is there for a reason. use the screw tray, you will be glad you did specially if you will take long to do the job, this will help you keep all scews and components organized
My Problem
The famous YOLD
My Fix
Used the guide step by step, everything went perfect. My PS3 is back in business. I only had a problem closing the clip for the BR drive cable on the MB. Couldn't close it any more, used some tape to ceep the cable in place.
My Advice
just stay calm...
My Problem
The problem I had was the all too familiar Y.L.O.D. on my PS3. The reason I decided to fixit on my own was the console was way off warranty. And I love taking things apart.
My Fix
The repair went well I was a little nervous about the Heat Gun steps, but the rest was all good. I have never had trouble with screws and bolts I love to see what makes things tic. But I have never used a Heat Gun before. The guide was well written and the Y.L.O.D. kit form your site was Excellent! This site and its tools are Excellent and I Look forward to my next projects.
My Advice
The Drill Master Heat gun provided in the YLOD kit works very well however as the description says it does tend to smoke just a little the first couple times. Between heating sessions I set it on the stove with the overhead vent on. I have used it again since then and the smoke has mostly diminished. Also the kit includes many different screw tips, make sure to use the right ones, there are a few different sizes inside that PS3. Best of Luck!
My Problem
After many years my 60gb PS3 experienced the yellow light of death. It served me well and kinda thought that was it. Bought a new one but missed the old one, which was bigger heavier and it ejected the disks, a feature I missed. So I found Ifixit, bought the repair kit and decided to give it a shot.
My Fix
set up a work table with a lamp, a screw tray and the wife's Ipad to follow step by step from the online guide. Followed the vid and guide exactly, and had no problems. First time working with thermal paste, but the info on the site got me through it. First time using the heat gun on a circuit board, which was intimidating, but once again made easy by the guide. Let it cool for a while to be sure, had dinner then came back to it and reasembled it, doing the steps in reverse. It took most of the day for me, had to buy acetone for cleaning the old paste off, set up, cooling ect. 5 hrs or so.
My Advice
My advice is do it. The kit gives you everything to do the job(except a cleaner). You cant go wrong for the price of the kit. the heat gun, tools and parts are good quality and worked fine. As long as you can turn a screw and follow directions, you can do this. You have to be patient though. one more thing, you HAVE to have a screw tray with compartments to hold each steps screws and parts. That will make your life easier.
My Problem
I received a PS3 with YLOD and I must say i was a bid cautious about ordering the kit, but I looked over the web and i found similar kits with less products for much more money. I received the kit and followed the easy instructions, and low and behold IT WORKED! I was quite please to get the unit up and going.
My Fix
I followed the instructions from the online video and the repair was simple and straight forward.
My Advice
I know now, if i have any tech device that needs fixing, i will first go to ifixit.com before looking elsewhere. These guys are stellar! Thank you!
My Problem
Got the light of death on my 2nd ps3 so i decided to give this a try since i had two ps3 that was dead. And i made an mistake with the heat gun setting i used high instead of low but the ps3 is working 100% so far. I am happy
My Fix
It went good
My Advice
Give it a try the ps3 is dead anyways if this works for a few months i will be happy.
