Some Wireless Keyboard Keys Not Working

Reply by hdh607

Friend of mine gave me her apple wireless keyboard (A1255) that she spilled wine on. Two keys are not working - mute and volume down. Everything else seems to be working fine.

I've looked around a bit and can't find any threads, here or there, that have to do with fixing individual keyboard keys after a spill. I'm able to pry off the key and will clean it out the best I can. I also can't see an easy way of accessing the back of the keyboard for further investigation.

any ideas?

There really isn't any way unless you want to try to tinker with it. I don't know of any guides for it. We just toss them once they get a spill that disables something.

Know a good electronics recycler?

No problem, use the finder menu bar to adjust the sound or Sound system preferences.

The only way to repair the keyboard is to open it and retrace the keys contact circuits.

The menu bar is at the top of the screen on the desktop and the sound level icon sits on the right side near the time/date. If it is not present, go to system preference>sound and put a check in the box at the bottom of the window where it says show volume in menu bar.

Try washing it in distilled water and let dry for a couple days and it should be fine. I have done this with both the old and new style wireless apple bluetooth keyboards as well as the wired ones. Do remember to remove any batteries first.

I have heard a few people put theirs in the dishwasher but I never tried that since regular water leaves water marks and can make things worse. Distilled water won't damage any of the components.

Do make sure you let it dry for at least 2 days before putting the batteries back in and do not use a hairdryer.

Pry off the key? I didn't dare do that! I spilled a starchy substance, and have been able to clean it with alcohol, and let it dry and work them. I removed the clear tray, but could not access the period key underneath to unstick it. I guess I fear that if I pry off the key, I won't be able to put it back on again. How did you pry it off? How is it working now?
