larger HDD in Ipod 5th Gen

Reply by Tobn

Hi -

I recently upgraded my iPod 5th Generation (originally 60GB Hitachi HDD) with the new Toshiba 120GB 1.8" HDD.

It worked great until I dropped the iPod on the floor :(

I now bought the 160GB Samsung HDD from private. It was supposed to be new - when I got it it had a label "refurbished" on it but was still originally wrapped in an antistatic shrink-wrap. I thought refurbished means as good as new.

When I finally installed it into my 5th Gen iPod the HDD started spinning but the only thing that appeared on the screen was the "sad ipod icon" and not the prompt telling me to connect the ipod to Itunes and have it restored as it did when I installed the 120GB HDD.

Does anybody know whether the 160GB HDDs do not work with the older 5Gen logic boards? Or is the HDD I got simply broken?

Thanks for a short answer

Tobi

Did you connect to iTunes and restore the iPod?

Reply reply by Tobn

like i described - it does not show the screen telling me to connect it to iTunes - just the sad iPod symbol.

Does anyone have experience installing a hdd larger than 120 GB in an iPod 5th gen? is it possible to install the 160GB hdd from the newer iPod classic (6th gen)?

Reply reply by Tobn

but to answer the question - yes I did connect it to iTunes - and it still showed the sad iPod symbol

If iTunes will not do anything with it, then that would be past my expertise level on iPods. Sorry.

Thanks for your input Sarabian!

Does anyone know anything about hdds in an iPod 5th gen larger than 120GB?

I don't think is a good idea to "upgrade" your ipod video. If its 30GB, let it be 60GB. I tried it before and no luck. Stick with a 60, guarantee it will work.

Rule of thumb, never buy any refurbished drive because you really don't know what you are going to get.

sorry typo * if its 60 let it be 60gb, dont want to change the volume.

If you have a Mac, you should be able to check out the disk with the Disk Utility.

@Starlock:

Thanks for the info - I am going to try that on the iMac from my girlfriend. Will that work, even when the iPod would not connect to a WinPC?

@osxscene:

Like I said, the 120GB HDD (Thosiba MK1214GAH) worked perfectly in my iPod 5Gen (former 60GB) until I dropped the iPod on the floor.

So why not upgrade? The 120GB were all available in iTunes and accessible in the iPod.

sure it works like what you said, but I don't think you want to upgrade since the ipod video software mobileplayer designed to handle on 30/60/80Gb.

its always best to replace the same part.

Disk Utility might work, it work for one of my client. I would just recommend you to replace the whole drive because if your drive is messed up, chances are is broken. (when you hear clicking noises).

Heck, these drives are cheap anyways. Stick with the 60, guarantee it will work. :)

The funny thing you know, I have a ipod video 5.5th gen 30GB ran over by a Toyota Camry, I'm still using it. I just replaced the screen and back cover. hmmm

I just connected the iPod 5Gen with the 160GB HDD installed to an iMac - and no difference to connecting it to my WIN XP PC: The drive spins up - the apple logo appears and then the "sad iPod symbol" appears. The ipod does not show up in the disk utility (it does when I install the 60GB drive).

There is no way to access the disk of the iPod.

So I figure the 160GB HDD is broken - am I right?

@osxscene - let me set this straight again - I've already installed a 120GB HDD in my 5.0Gen iPod - and the iPod worked fine with it. I had a 5.0 iPod with a 120GB HDD fully working. The differences to the iPod classic with 120GB were it's outer shell and the iPod video operating system. With the 120 GB I was able to carry around loads more of videos, podcasts and of course music - so why not upgrading?

I say the iPods 5.0 - 5.5 and the iPod classic all share pretty much the same logic board and the same over all hardware. The major differences are only in the outer shells, the appearance of the software (coverflow etc.) and the disk sizes. Nothing more - interchanging the different hdds works if you have the right connecting ribbon cable at hands - and of course if the hdd you're planning to install isn't broken ;)

Hi,

i'm about to upgrade the broken drive in my iPod with a 120GB HDD from Toshiba.Good to hear that it will work.

I've read a lot about upgrading an i think you should try to clean the drive before connecting to your iPod.That means to remove any filesystem on the HDD. There are special cleaning/removing tools for HDDs such as Zerofill a.s.o..

That the HDD in your iPod isn't recognized by the PC or MAC doesn't mean anything, because the reason could be a iPod incompatible filesystem on the HDD.

Buy an adapter for the HDD and connect it directly via IDE-Connector/USB to your Computer.

If the HDD isn't recognized it's broken/damaged.

If the HDD is recognized but not accessible there is a foreign filesystem s.a. ext3 or ReiserFS on the HDD.You can remove that with a removal tool mentioned above.

I hope that i could help you.

Hi Crisb,

Yes - the Toshiba MK1214GAH works fine in the 5.0Gen ipod - just make sure you have the right ribbon cable. The Hitachi ZIF-Connector looks illusory similar to the Toshiba ZIF connector and so does the cable - the hitachi cable is just some 0.1mms thicker than the toshiba which is why you need a different one. The Samsung cable looks totally different.

Thanks for the advice to hook up the hdd to the computer prior to connecting it into the iPod.

Where can I get such a connector? or a casing? I started looking for it, but all I found was some expensive weird looking cables from china.

Thanks for a short reply.

Hi Tobi,

the cable will hopefully be no problem, because the original iPod HDD was a Toshiba 80GB and the new one is also a Toshiba, but this time with 120GB.

Back to your problem. You can get adapters here:

http://store.era-ele.com/computer-adapte...

(I hope its ok to post external links)

As you need it only once, a simple adapter is all you need.

I think, that the size of the drive is not important, as i found a website with an offer to upgrade your iPod 5th generation to 240GB with an Toshiba HDD. So i think its rather the brand of the HDD than the size.

External links are totally cool. Our goal is to help people fix things, and the format [http://www.example.com|handy link to example.com] is designed to make that easy. Hi Crisb,

thanks for the info and the link to the webshop.

Unfortunately I cannot find an adapter that would work with a Samsung drive - all they offer are adapters with ribbon cables for hitachi or toshiba drives.

I keep on searching - I post my findings here - since this site here is really totally cool!

Hi Tobi,

stupid me, i totally forgot that you have a Samsung HDD.

I tried to find an adapter for Samsung, but couldn't even find a cable to connect a Samsung drive to an Ipod.

I found other websites who offers Samsung drives for iPod 5.Gen and 6.Gen. But they only offer cables for Hitachi and Toshiba, nowhere a different iPod-HDD cable for Samsung drives.

How does your cable look like and where did you get it?

Reply reply by Tobn

The cable I got is obviously a used one removed from a ipod 6th gen.

I got it here in Germany at

http://www.podmod.de/

but only by request, they didn't offer it on their website - and not very cheap (24 EUR!)

The cable has the same width on both ends - not like the Toshiba or the Hitachi cable which feature a narrow end, which goes into the ZIF-connector of the logic board and a wider end which goes in the ZIF-connector of the HDD.

It also has some small holes in it where the ZIF-Connector of the Samsung-hdd hooks into. I have a picture of my broken Toshiba 120GB and the Samsung 160GB Drive each with their ribbon cables attached.

Is there a possibility to post pictures in this forum?

I can send it to you by email - depending on whether you want to post your email adress here - maybe you have a "spam-account-email" which you want to use for that reason?

Hi Tobi,

aha Deutschland....die Welt is nen Dorf...Grüße aus Berlin.

I've found an Samsung cable for the iPod 6G on eBay. And to be honest, i've never seen a cable with holes in a adapter-kit. My only idea would be to ask Samsung, if they know a producer of an adapter and where to get it.

Hi Tobi,

i was browsing eBay to take another look at the HDD cable and some offers say the cable is only for iPod 6G or incompatible with iPod 80GB/5G/Video.
