Changing Macbook unremovable battery

Reply by mpoinar

This is a before purchase question.

I want to buy a Macbook but found out it has an unremovable battery and the closest dealer to where we live is over 200 miles away so can anyone tell me how to do this myself? I want to get this only for when I take a few trips in our RV a year so I can check my email and surf for campgrounds online.

Thank you,

Martha

If you follow directions about charging/discharging your battery so you don't kill it prematurely you should have no worries.

Overcharging aka (cooking) or completely discharging the battery a couple of times will kill it early - otherwise you should get years of use out of the battery.

At which point your warranty should be expired and opening the case to change the battery would not be an issue.

I imagine it would be similar to replacing a Macbook Air battery which is also not supposed to be user replaceable either.

Excellent advice, thank you! Of course when I called Apple about it, they said I would have to ship it in for them to do it and I would have my computer back in a week or so. My goodness, who wants to do that?

This looks very doable and puts me at ease.
