PowerBook g4 17" keyboard doesn't work!

Reply by Jerry09

Hello,

So I have a PowerBook g4 17" model :A1085, I recently replaced the hard drive on it. It worked perfect for about a month, after that keypads would just stop working, the laptop would still be on,but just wouldn't be able to use SOME letters. It also starting going to sleep mode for no reason, like if I was closing the screen but I really wasn't. I would be working on something and all of a sudden it would just go to a black screen, I noticed the bottom light breathing, like when you close your screen. Well if anyone has had the same problem or can help me out with mine, I would gladly appreciate it! Thanks!

Sleep switch could be going. Set sleep delay for long time, uncheck put hd to sleep if possible.

Also if you battery is going, dropping into sleep/hibernate like this can be a sign.

I had a similar problem with my 17" PowerBook. The dash key wouldn't work, but when I hit the return key, the dashes would appear-and they wouldn't stop dashing away-as if I was keeping my finger on the dash key. I never spilled anything on it, it just started doing this for no reason. It wouldn't go to sleep either.

I took the computer to the people at www.intosh.net and they replaced the keyboard...after trying to clean it. They were honest and hardworking. They only charged me about $100 for the keyboard and about $40 for labor. I had my computer the next day! If I had taken it to Apple, it would have been 3x the cost and minimum of 3 weeks without the computer.

Be sure to back up everything on your computer though, just to be safe.
