Powerbook G4 Hard Drive replacement and software upgrade?

Reply by andersong

Hi,

I have a PowerBook G4 15:: Model A1046. I run the disk utility and the S.M.A.R.T. status comes up failing (in red) When I run the Mac HD it does not show the S.M.A.R.T. status failing. The HD is a Toshiba 74.5 #MK8025GAS. Should I replace it and us the 160 size? What would be the last OS software that will run best. It is only for my daughters itunes and email.

Thanks

Don't get larger than 120GB HD, if you do you'll have to partition a start up drive of 120GB (OS can't "see" or be installed on a drive larger than that).

You didn't specify the processor speed of the G4, that will determine if you can run OS 10.3 or 10.4.

Yes Depending up on your RAM you can use either 10.3, 10.4, (at least 256 MB of RAM) or 10.5 (a PowerPC G4 [867MHz or faster] processor and at least 512MB of memory).

Good Luck,

For a better performance with Tiger or Leopard you should run full ram and your PB can take 2 gigs.

Hi Again,

Will MAC Leopard OS X 10.5.4 install and work ok or just 10.4?

Andersong, you can have up to 2GB of ram, 1GB pc2700 in each slot, it will run OS 10.5 Just fine, and hard drive's up to what is manufactured for ATA drives.. 160GB are very poplar, as are 250GB ATA Drives..
