was running fine... no new software just the usual upgrades from apple. Suddenly it boots us off internet and all apps are running very slow. Nothing new has been added in over a year.

thanks

alrighty boys and girls... I've emptied caches and prefs. I'va ran Applejack and every other utility. They all find nothing wrong. NOW I am reloading the OS 10 software (erase reformat install) it has been installing software for 4 hours. what the !*@@ is going on? Do I need an HD? (there is plenty of space) Could the fan cause these probs? Before I tear it down i have to figure it out. Anyone?

a failing harddrive certaintly fits your symptoms. a good test is using a Smart Utility - it actually tests the drive, unlike Applejack - which is just a software tool .

I used tech tools, apple disc utility. Do you think it's still the HD even though they've all come back ok?

If your install is going that slow did you repartition or just erase?

How much free space on that HD? You need at least 20% for VRAM and Temp files.

How do you check VRAM.The HD has plenty of space. We mostly use the computer for the internet. there isn't much loaded on it. I only have iphoto, (no ilife or work) word, photoshop. My son plays zoo tycoon (I took it off). I'm really at a loss

Repartitioning in this situation would be a waste of time. If the hard drive is not giving errors and accepts the format then the partition tables are ok. If you are erasing the hard drive, it's obvious that there isn't a lack of space for things, so it sounds to me like either a hard drive that is going bad or possibly memory chips. Do you have any known good ones that you can try, or (if you have 2 chips in) can you take out one at a time and see if it changes? Worth a shot.

I've sent it off too a friend for that exact test (i don't have any chips) Ill keep you posted. thanks everyone for all the input. It's very hard to diagnose without having the computer ripped apart in front of you.

To everyone who has helped me this week. It was the hard drive.

Thank you for all your help and support. You guys rock the house.

The folks at Macentrix diagnosed, recovered files, replaced HD, maxxed out RAM for $300. I think they did fair by me if anyone needs a recommend for repair work, they've been around a long time.

Sincerely

Maria
