powerbook g4 1.67

Have a problem with computer start.

I get 1 chime and a quick ? mark in a box then the screen goes to grey with the apple logo then nothing. Have tried starting from apple disc. but have not been able to access the hard drive. It shows up shadowed and wont let me select it.

this started when the computer was doing a power pc update- got stuck would not finish download for a very long time -maybe an hour and then this. Someone from the genuis bar told me they thought it was a bad hard drive, just from the discription I gave. Second opinions, ideas, thoughts.

thanks

Yea - I've seen failed updates pooch a HD... one did in my Hitachi 250GB drive locked it up so I can't format it.

Sounds like your MBD is screwed up.

You did try running DFA-Disk Repair? If you have access to DiskWarrior, TechTool Pro, or Drive Genius you might be able to resurrect it..

Good Luck,

All I have are the mac install disc. was able to get to disc. repair one time but the computer wouldnt let me select a hard drive to repair - like it tells me its there but you just cant access it -after that just nothing comes up past the apple logo. Going by instructions from mac os the missing manual went for single user mode -got into the terminal program to be able to type in the comand to check and repair disc. got the disc appears to be ok message. after that one time have never been able to get back to the terminal program instead get ERROR CODE MASS STORAGE 2STF/8/3:ATA-100ata-6-MASTER.

guess when you put 2+2 you do get 4 ATA-100 would be the hard drive huh

Yea -

BTW that's a very low level check of the disk (there's many possible errors overlooked).

What's the manuf. date on the drive? If it's near 5yrs or older IMnsHO it really doesn't make sense to f@rt with it.

Dont know how old the hard drive is but its been in the laptop since I bought it 4 years ago.

Will be getting a replacment 160gb and attempt install myself.

any tips, warnings, etc?

IMnsHO it's a mart move to replace the HD- FIWIW you might want to get an external case for it - you could probably still salvage any files you absolutely need.

Insert an OS disk in the optical drive before you replace the HD. When you start up you'll have to use Disk Utilities to format the drive GUID for intel use. Then install the OS.

Pretty straight forward,

Good Luck,

got new hard drive and followed instructions from ifixit and am up and running.

I did have a fright when no hard drive showed up but then recalled I read -I think in one of your posts to another person -that the g4 powerbook would not recognize a hard drive larger than 120gb so I went to utilities and partitioned the drive 120/40 and bingo no problems.

so far so good

thanks
