iPod not outputting sound

Reply by mattglue

Hi all. I have an iPod Video (5G) which stopped outputting sound recently. Everything on it seems to work fine - screen is great, syncs fine, seconds tick by as songs play. But it does not output sound to the headphone jack.

I noticed this a couple months ago. A few days later I got the idea to try it in my dock speakers and it worked fine, so I thought the problem must be the headphone jack, and said oh well since I have an iPhone anyway. Recently my interest was piqued again and I've since noticed that some days it outputs extremely distorted music through the headphone jack, on very occasional days it works fine, but most of the time it does not output through the jack. So I ordered a headphone replacement through here.

However I just noticed that it's not actually working through the dock connection either. So the problem is probably deeper. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Well, I will see if the new headphone jack works or not. I just discovered the troubleshooting section (imagine that!) and noticed someone mentioning that if the dock does not output sound either, the problem is likely the logic board. I suppose I will cross that bridge or not when I come to it.

The headphone jack replacement did not fix the problem. So yes, I would say that if the dock port also does not output sound, the problem is likely the logic board or something else. Perhaps the troubleshooting section should mention this?

So given that, and given that a logic board will cost $70, and given that the HDD began clicking after the install and will therefore probably fail in the next few months, I bought a new iPod Classic.
