Mac Book Pro 17" "No AirPort card installed" (wifi crash)

Reply by Riki

I've got a big problem with my airport card.

I've got a Mac Book Pro 17" 2.5 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo (Model Number: A1261) of 2008. My airport card worked very well till one day that I lost my connection unexpectedly. The only one message is: "Airport: Off" and "Turn Airport On" but although I try to turn it on the airport stays off. I've changed the card, thinking that was the problem, but isn't it. Now my Airpor work well at Mac startup and after a random time she goes off. When she's off the only way I can rekindle it is to restart the Mac.

I thought it can be a software problem and I've format my Mac several times with no results. The problem still the same.

Searching through internet I've found that there is a little card under the Airport card that can be the problem. With iFixit I've found the part and the guide to how to change it but before spending $100 I thought I'd ask here if it really can be the problem or not.

Do you have any ideas?

Do you know that there's never been a liquid problem? You could remove the card and use some contact cleaner on the connector pins and in the slot-use an old toothbrush to clean the slot.

What are you doing at the time the connection drops? Is it always the same thing? Does it seem related to movement, a single app, or sleep?

Does the box run hot? Could it be the board flexing from heat? If so maybe you need to re-coat your heat sync.

First of all thank's for the reply, I'll try to clean the connector pins as u said.

When the connection drops is always the same thing, If i click at the Wifi connection icon the only thing it said to me is: "No AirPort card installed". Isn't never a sleep problem and for the software is the same thing, isn't the same app running, sometimes i was running mail and sometimes only safari or OS updates.

I was thinking at the temperature problem too cause, sometimes, when i was using the ac/dc connection it seams to crash a little quickier than normal but it can be only my impression.

thx, Riki

Hi there, i have exactly the same problem since i updated to 10.6, and it is pretty random and seems to occur pretty more often in WPA2 connections than WPA connections. I just had my motherboard and aiport card replaced hoping it would fix the issue but it haven't, sadly... I have a C2D 2,6 ghz macbook pro 4,1 (March 2008 too) with 17" led screen. If you find anything new, please post here !

I have got the same problem on the same type of MacBook Pro. Started in december and still there. But it gets harder and harder to get it to work at startup. Have noticed that the temp of the airport card is between 120-125 degr. Celsius. Thats very HOT! Any ideas what to do? Please...

There isn't a solution to this yet I guess. I have the same problems but with a hard freeze thrown in. The wifi card starts dropping connection after a while and/or shuts down and is shown as uninstalled. The random hard freezes are more common after that has happened at least once.

Throwing my hat into this as well. Same model, same issues. Wifi shuts off after a few minutes of running, random hard freezes every once in awhile. I don't have any insight to add, though :-(

Exactly same problem, with the same mac model (Model Number: A1261) of 2008. I replaced logic board but it did not resolve it. Don't know what else could be done. Any help is appreciated...

To reset PRAM and NVRAM follow these instructions:

Shutdown the computer

Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option (Alt) , P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.

Turn on the computer.

Press and hold the Command-Option(Alt)-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.

Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.

Release the keys.

Your computer’s PRAM and the NVRAM are reset to the default values. The clock settings may be reset to a default date on some models.

Now you should see your wireless airport card again.

I have the same model MBP, similar problem (airport shuts itself off and won't go on unless I restart AFTER I let the computer set for a while). I have also reset PRAM, etc. That is not the fix.

I'm sad to hear that replacing the logic board doesn't help :S

command, option P and R all at same time worked for me. What an inconvenience for a 2,000.00 dollar computer. Makes me wonder whi I switched from microsoft. Apple needs to find a fix for this soon. Highly disappointed customer !

So I think i have figured out what the problem is... go to utilities/uninstall air display. And uninstall it. It will update boot cash and restart. I was getting the exact same problems on my 2.5 intel core 2 duo with 10.5.8. then it eventually didnt even recognize my airport at all. Now that I have removed this useless app. It seems to be working fine.

Best of luck!
