The speakers on the 1st generation iPhone are part of the display assembly. I really wish we could get that part, but it seems to be a nearly impossible part to find. As far as we know, the individual speakers are not user-replaceable. I'm sorry that I don't have a better answer for you. :(

PS. Have you tried a restore through iTunes? It's a long-shot but definitely worth a try.

I have thought about it, but mine is an unlocked/jailbroken phone. I don't care about the jailbroken, but the unlocked concerns me. I see many ways online to do it, but am hesitant to try. I suppose this gives me a good reason to go ahead and give it a shot.

I also have an issue with my 1st gen iphone. Looking at the face, only the left speaker works. Is there a way to replace anything to get it to work?
