iBook G4 shutdown with power adapter

Reply by kimhoover

This 1.2GHx G4 iBook works fine, except that if I unplug or plug in the power adapter while the computer is running or in sleep mode, it immediately shuts down. It will then not restart unless I either plug the power adapter back in, remove and reinstall the battery, or reset the PMU. Whichever way I restart it, the clock has gone back to some date decades ago.

I replaced the battery, and gained more life, but it still has the shut-down problem. I'm wondering if replacing the DC in-board would solve this, or if it is a deeper problem, like with the PMU.

Going back to 'some date decades ago" is an engineers birthday it does this to let you know your backup battery is shot if there is a backup battery - some iBooks never had a backup battery,(AKA cmoss or pram battery) that function was provided by the laptop battery).

My 1.5 Ghz Power PC G4 is doing something similar. The battery is dead, so it must be on the charger. If the power is cut or I turn off the computer, or put it to sleep, must restart by resetting the PMU. Where is the PMU? Where is the PMU battery?

No pram battery in the iBookG3/G4 lines. Machead3 is right, it's the laptop battery who plays the pram battery role.

You're also right kimhoover. The DC in board would be the first part I would replace in your situation.

I think (but not sure) that the power manager unit (PMU) is located somewhere on the logic board.

Well, I replaced the DC in board, and it didn't make a difference. I guess I'll have to be careful to not manipulate the plug when the computer is not shut down.
