Liquid spill? Why would you want to disable the keyboard?

As long as you don't twist (cross or short) the connector you can pop it out while the box is running (I've done this hundreds of times to no ill effect when testing/diagnosing Macbooks) but you have to be aware/careful of shorting other components with your fingers or jewelry.
