4GB Memory upgrade problem

Reply by weible

Macbook White 13" 2008 Dual core 2.2 GHZ. I am upgrading from 1GB to 4GB. I installed two new chips and at power on the dvd drive makes some noise, but it does not boot. I can switch to one of my old 512MB chips and a new 2GB and it boots with 2.5GB. Switching the 2GB memory makes no difference, they all boot. I even have a 3rd 2GB chip and no combination of 2GB works. But it seems just a combination of 512MB and 2GB works. I have two Kingston brand PC2-6400 and one Crucial PC2-6400. Help!!

Hi, According to OWC the proper ram for your computer is PC2-5300. The difference in ram may be causing your problem. I've included the URL for OWC for you, Ralph

Correction--the memory is PC5300. Ralph

Just wondering what are the 512 chips? If they are PC2-6400 then the OWC data is probably wrong. Ralph

You can run it at 2.5GB RAM no problems (more RAM beats Dual Channel) If you want/need 4GB Dual Channel you'll have to try get some 667MHz DDR2 SDRAM (PC2-5300); which is what's spec'd for that box.

Good Luck,

N.
