Do I Need Sim Card In iPhone 3G To Unlock Screen?

Reply by cochranb

I just replaced the entire display assembly on an iPhone 3G with an IF137-008-1 iPhone 3G Display Assembly. The sim card for the phone is being held by the owner. When I turned on the phone to check that all is well, the display turns on fine but there is a message "No SIM card installed" and I cannot operate the slider to unlock the display. Likewise, I am unable to power off the phone by holding in the power button and then using the screen slider.

So my question is, is this normal? Will installing the sim card restore the screen? Or, did I make a mistake with one or more of the connections with the 3 small cables?

Is there a way to power off the phone until I can meet with the owner and test it with the sim card?

Thanks!

Bob

To answer my own question: you can use the screen without the sim card installed, but of course won't get any phone functionality. My specific problem was that I shouldn't unlock the screen because the slider wouldn't move to the right. Why wouldn't the touch screen work? I zipped the phone open and realized cable #2 was disconnected. Reconnecting it and making sure it is connected fixed the problem. I was able to work the sliders, even without the sim card installed. --Bob
