Dropped ipod touch in the pool....

Reply by therod

Hi,

So, I dropped my iPod touch in the swimming pool while I was coaching the other day. When I fished it out of the pool I didn't turn it back on, rather, I went to my lab and stuck it in the vacuum concentrator to dry it out. When I removed it from the vacuum concentrator (a day later)... Note: Vacuum concentrators dry things via a vacuum and a cold trap... anyways, I attempted a power up and the charge indicator was on (barely visible). So, I plugged it into a charger and let it charge.... I did a iPOD restore and everything works... but...

The backlight is not functioning. AKA, it's GONE!!!! So, I guess my question is: do you think this is a LCD circuitry issue? Or is this something deeper. I just ordered some tools to open the @!&@ thing and want to attempt a deeper investigation... If someone thinks it is the LCD, maybe I will purchase a new one and replace it..

I know many people have had this issue but nobody seems to have a good answer.and how they fix it... It cannot be that bad if everything works but the light...

Please advise,

The Rod

Put it into a bag of plain, uncooked rice and let it sit for a couple of days. The rice will absorb any moisture that is still in it and hopefully it will allow your backlight to connect again. Let me know how it works.

thank you for the enlightening suggestion, Gabriel. It is pleasant knowing that we share the earth with such a incredible humanitarian. I would go buy another one, Gabriel, but, you see, I am doing my PhD and money, although it would be nice, is not currently readily accesible. But hey, maybe one day when I do have money I can do that. In the meantime, I will strive to find answers to questions not yet solved.... And maybe one day I can cure whatever it is that is afflicting your ego and confidence. Or maybe you just had a bad day.

Kind Regards,

S

Was the ipod ON when it went in the drink, or OFF? (If it was OFF, your chances are a little better.)

I second the suggestion to put the Pod in a bag of uncooked rice. And hopefully it was turned off as dentoni mentions. Rice really does help dry it out. Also, most people advise removing the battery right away after the device has been immersed in something.

My guess is...and I really am guessing here, don't consider me authoritative...the backlight could be dimmed either because the motherboard of the Pod has shorted out or the LCD has been shorted out. Or both these things could be true. Try further drying out with rice. I'm concerned that the battery is still in there, but there is nothing to be done for that until you can remove it. When you get the tools to zip the Pod open, my suggestion is to replace the LCD if it is cheap and easy to do so. If the backlight doesn't come on, then the motherboard is probably fried. Again, I'm guessing. And I could be putting my foot in my mouth here. --Bob
