So I think i have figured out what the problem is... go to utilities/uninstall air display. And uninstall it. It will update boot cash and restart. I was getting the exact same problems on my 2.5 intel core 2 duo with 10.5.8. then it eventually didnt even recognize my airport at all. Now that I have removed this useless app. It seems to be working fine.
