Powerbook 17" 1.33 G4 will not boot from CD

Reply by getitimped

The machine is a 17" aluminum laptop, 1.33GHz Model: A1052. It had a bad superdrive and kept locking up on it's own after booting. I deleted all data and left apps alone. I want to do a clean install also.

I replaced the Superdrive (by the way, I bought the superdrive and tools from you, along with downloading the repair instructions. Awesome! really helpful and a great parts and tools resource). When I boot from the HD, the bar across the top does not show and I cannot open any new finder windows but I can start any of the apps in the dock. I was able to start Safari and get on the internet. If I launch something from the dock, I can't close it.

I had to buy an old version, Jaguar 10.2.4, as I don't have the originals. If I try to boot from the CD or use the ALT key on boot to get boot source options, it eventually dies as well. The hardware diagnostics will not work; it says it will not work on this hardware.

I know that the CDs that come with the machine are specific. The 10.2.4 disk I have says Powerbook G4 17 inch Software Install and Restore on it. Is this a usable CD? If not, can I restore an OS from a G5 Tower to this machine? Can I do clean install from the command line?

Also, the only memory are the chips next to the battery, correct? There is no hardwired memory. If that is so, I only have 1gb RAM installed.

What are my options for a clean install with what I already have (os 10.2.4)? I've spent a little over $300 already. I just want to be sure I'm going in the right direction

I look forward to your response (I know it is Saturday, but the sooner the better.

Thank you very much in advance.

Jeff

Your computer came with 10.2.7 installed as the minimum OS so the 10.2.4 may be causing a problem as it may be for an earlier Powerbook 17. Since you can start Safari check under the Apple and using software update see if you can download the OS update. No charge for trying and might resolve your problem. Good luck Ralph

Thank you for your quick response. The OS has been upgraded through 10.4 already. I will try to find the upgrade but I still don't know how to do a clean install with what I have. Can I download a 10.2.7 for free to boot from like a .dmg file? Would you happen to have the link?

Also, cannot get into the apple on the finder bar. I click on it but nothing happens. Is there another spot to get into OS updates to download?

Also, even if it came with 10.2.7, the .7 is the patch number. It is still version 10.2. Shouldn´t I be able to boot from the CD anyway. Could the harddrive be damaged.

Its possible--but double check the cable for the hard drive first. If you have upgraded to 10.4 successfully I wouldn't worry about 10.2. Ralph

OK. But when I do a clean install with a disk from a G5 I have. It came with Panther. Won;t boot from that CD either. Is there a way to restore the OS at the command line level

One more thing ... If I do Ctrl Alt Esc or use the keyboard eject button to eject a cd, which will not eject anyway, I get taken to a the login screen.

Please help ...

Target boot the laptop, put the OS CD/DVD in the G5. Connect them with a FIREWIRE cable (probably a 400) cable.

Leave the laptop in target mode and powered by charger/ac adapter. Start the install from the G5 and after restart installer will ask you where and what kind of install to do, choose the FIREWIRE drive and install.

Good Luck,

N;

OK. So I did this. When I go through the install, it reboots, but there is no Firewire icon or external drive when the G5 restarts for installation.

Do I have to have file sharing on? Do I have to configure the Firewire ports for use like I did for the Ethernet port?

So either one of the Firewire 400 ports is bad or the cable is bad. Is there any way to hardware test the firewire ports?
