Hi Bryan

I've had this problem recently and if you look at the recent thread 'powerbook kernel panic' or along those lines that is the same too.

I am very suspicious considering your incident makes three of this kind I have heard of this week.

I was unable to fix mine. You cannot use holding t at start-up to connect via firewire to another cmputer. It is very odd and I find it very dodgy that these occurances are so close together on similar computers.

As for stuck discs just hold down the click as you start-up.

Sorry I can't be more help but I hope more about it is uncovered soon

If it's a software issue, boot the ibook holding down the COMMAND and the S keys until you see a black screen with white text then type:

fsck -f

This will check your system integrity and do the repairs if needed.

At the end of the processus a message should tell:

<<The volume (name of the hard drive) appears to be OK>>

If you have an other message redo the fsck -f action again.

When the repair is done type:

reboot

and press on the RETURN key.

If the problem is a failing hard drive this procedure will be no help. If so you should find a way to boot the ibook from an external source (firewire hard drive or firewire optical drive)to check the internal drive with Disk Utility.

lemerise is correct but it is fsck -fy you should type not fsck -f

It this works great but it didn't with my iBook G4.

Hi to lemerise you gave me some advise a few days ago about my ibook G4 and it seemed to work ok i was able to boot it up, and thought it was ok BUT

if i can expalin why i have a Mac it was bought for me by my son who lives in the states and it is used more or less just for web-cam sessions, i have some music and some photo's on it as well

after doing what you advised i was able to boot it up, but could not open any of the proga on it ie ipic's or ichat as it was not long out of warranty i rang apple care they said as it was a software prob they would look at it theey checked everything out said it was working fine and went through the reinstall software process but my son installed it all about 4 years ago and cannot remember what he used as the password we have gone through it over the past week all to no avail trying to get back to the original settings do you know any way to find out the original password

You can reset the system password if you still have the ibook original install disk or with a retail installation disk. Just boot the ibook with the installation disk holding the C key when you ear the chime until you see the grey screen with the apple. Once the system disk is loaded, choose a language and on the next screen go to the Utilities menu and choose the Reset Password sub menu, write the new password for the ibook volume and that's it. Exit the installation procedure and restart choosing your ibook HD.

No problem whiping the disk and doing a clean install. That's the better way to install a fresh system but you need a back up of your data before doing it.
