Powerbook 1.5 15" ALUM not reading lower ram slot

Reply by cpbortnick

I had a 512 in lower, 1G in upper. I noticed I was only reading 1G in upper, lower read empty. The lower slot won't read no matter how many times I re-seat it. I know the ram sticks are good. It read when I took it to an apple dealer but when I got it home it was reading empty again. Is it a big deal to replace the memory slots?

Any suggestions? Can a slot take a 2 gig memory stick?

Thanks,

Connie

Knowne issue with the PB G4 alu 1.5Ghz. The only way to repair the lower slot is to replace the PB motherboard. The upper slot cannot take 2 gigs memory. 1 gig is the max.

Phooey! I will continue with 1G. I just bought a second and now don't need it.

Sheesh!

Thanks so much for your reply,

Connie

I have a 12" Aluminum Powerbook with the identical problem. For 4 years it ran just fine with 256 mb internal, 1 Gb in the user-accessible slot. Then one day, the PB thinks the expansion slot is empty. Everyone on all of the forums says, "oh well... replace the motherboard." That strikes me as the standard Windows thing where, if anything is not working right, you reboot. Why replace the whole motherboard? What, specifically, is wrong with the board that causes this issue in so many systems? Why can it not be fixed? Who can afford to replace the whole board on a 5 year old system? I would really like to know what the specific failure mode is, and whether it can be fixed by a person with appropriate skills.

Thanks

JEH
