trouble with network/airport settings

I have an old PowerBook G5 Titanium Onyx which has been dropped more times than I like to admit, even on hard surfaces! Anyway, the last drop broke the DVD drive which is a nuisance at the moment as I can't afford a new one just at the moment and I have a problem with my network setup having just installed a new broadband connection box which was replaced because it did not work properly.

My problem is that the Network preferences window keeps dropping a small window to tell me that "Your network settings have been changed by another application" and I can't get rid of this small dropdown, everytime I click on 'OK' it just comes back down so I can't reset anything.

I would have just reinstalled the software and started again as I don't have much on this machine, it's just used for connection in another part of the house, however, as the DVD/CD player is kaput that avenue is not open. Any ideas anyone please??

Target boot the problem child, firewire to another Mac run install from there.

OR pull the HD and do the install in a different mac (either could be problematic if you only have intel machines - won't like the installer).

The problem is in your network setup. Go to the network preferences panel and clic on lock icon in lower left corner, enter password and you should be fine. You may google this subject and you'll find links about this problem.

Thanks for your help machead3 and lemerise.

Tried locking the icon, no can do lemerise.

So, just before I got your emails I suddenly realized I had a USB HD. I put the install disc on this and, of course, it won't work; copyright issue I guess. Anybody know a way round this little problem?

machead3, I haven't gone to the 'install from another machine' option as the only other machine I have is an iMac (intel core duo) and, also, I am not sure what I would have to do to connect to the PowerBook even if I could with these two different systems?

OK I have done my homework and located an appropriate firewire cable and my iMac can now see the Powerbook which is happily displaying the firewire connection icon.

However, it looks like I will have to reinstall the system software and I can't work out how to boot the G4 from the iMac using the install disc inserted in the iMac. I don't want to kill my iMac doing this job so could someone kindly talk the idiot (me) through the process please?

Target start the problem child and leave connected to the working machine.

When you choose "install mac OS X" on the CD/DVD in the working mack it will reboot to the installer.

Before you actually complete the install you'll have to walk through the installation one step at a time and at some point the installer will recognise you have a working system and ask you what volume you want your install to be on, and what type of install you want to do. Choose clean install and target the firewire drive.

You're good to go from there.

I had the dropdown box problem telling me that my settings had been changed by another application. Which, I wonder. Well, no matter. after clicking the OK button a few times I realized that there is a half second delay before it comes back. So, I positioned the mouse pointer over the "Assist Me" button and when the OK button came up I his enter and immediately clicked the Assist Me button. The dropdown box has not been seen since. As a precaution I locked the padlock.

Yes, Thomasa98, I noticed that too and tried all the options I could go to but the dropdown always came back. I also thought that there might well be another programme which has changed the settings but I can't find it! I eventually got hold of a firewire cable between my iMac and the G4 and intended to reformat and reinstall all the software, I tried just reinstalling system X but the problem remained. However, the iMac will not accept the earliest system software 9, so I can't go that route either. I have a friend who has several macs and might have a G4, but he is on holiday at the moment, so I'll just have to be patient a while longer. Thanks for your help everyone, I'll let you know what happens!
