Iphone 3g - Headset sound not working after glass replace..

Reply by WhiteKnuckle

I have seen this post, but no replies. I just replaced the glass on my iPhone3g with the kit from ifixit.. now the headset sound doesn't work.. If I put headphones in, the headphones work.. the speaker works for hands free calls.. but the built in handset speaker does not work. Any ideas?

I still can't get sound to work. I am sure the 4 lead is firmly in the connector- and no earpiece sound. Did I break something?

Hi, I got the sound to work through the earpiece. It's ribbon 3 that matters, make sure that is connected securely!

On another note though, after buying a new headphone jack and installing it, the handsfree option now works.....thankfully but the volume control to lower the volume isn't working and neither is the vibrate mode switch. Anyone ever had this? Could it be a faulty part?

I have put Ribbon 3 in 6 or 7 times... Still no sound. I wonder if I broke the connector some how? The lever still goes up and seats down well..

Anyone still having this problem like me? Is there a part I can buy? Is Ribbon 3 replaceable?

You need to replace the little headset its self. Its like 5 bucks on ebay, and its actually an easy fix too, just pull the black metal piece off the back of your screen, it will pop out with a small flat hear screw driver. Then take the same screw driver and pop out the speaker, replace it with a new one and put it back together and you re good to go. Many people take the iphone apart with out static free gloves and the speaker is venerable to static

Ah, thanks for the help... I am going to order from ebay now.

Is it the speaker or the ribbon cable do you think? I guess I could order both but don't want to if it is most likely not one or the other.. I also see the ribbon cable as proximity sensor.. I am assuming this is the same part for Ribbon #3?

honestly i would replace both, if its not one its the other, and they are both not very expensive. And usually its the speaker its self. You could have a bad connection if you bent it up the wrong way or if the two little prongs coming off the back of the speaker are broken off. The ribbon is very weak so it could have been bent the wrong way and just gave up. And if the home button isnt working odds are you didnt place the two little copper nubs in the exact area they should have gone and they are not getting a connection on the large black antenna strip on the phone. If you wanna be safe just spend, 70.00 on ebay and buy the entire screen assembly , lcd , screen, digitizer, home button, speaker. The whole Ka-bang. It will solve every problem you are having. And if you ever go to resell the phone no one will know it was ever taken apart.

Success! I ordered the $5.55 new part 3 ribbon, and it works great. I must have scraped or kinked the old ribbon... thanks to all! Got the part off ebay and shipping was quick, from California

I had the same problem but was determined it would work so I took the phone apart again and realized I hadn't put ribbon 3 back in the connector. It was tricky to get in but found a link on youtube that helped. You have to lift a little flap on the connector for it to slide into then push flap back down. Now it works perfectly.

I had the same problem and eventually realized that I hadn't reconnected ribbon 3. When I originally opened the phone I guess I pulled too hard and ribbon 1, 2, and 3 all came off with the glass, so I kind of skipped reading those steps. When I was putting it back together I didn't even see the #3 ribbon cable since it's hidden under #2. Now it works great!

My camera also wasn't working which I just needed to reconnect the ribbon cable also. I love ifixit.
