water damage

Reply by laman

hi, water went under my macbook(13 inch white ) when i was away . when i came back home i tried to start it .but nothing happened, i plugged in the power adapter, but only the white standby light went on.

i let the power adapter in till the next morning , but still the same , only the standby light goes on , when press the start button.

i dont think the water spilled on the keyboard or any parts else , the water just spilled on the table and makes its way under the macbook,

i think i can hear the harddisk , i put my ear on the right side of the mouse pad , and i can hear a sound.

i tried to put a dvd in , but it won't suck it in.

is there anyone ,who knows if it can be repair ????

You have a SHORT in the book... DRY IT OFF before you kill it!

There's short detection built into the charger/book but it isn't fool proof. You could use alcohol then a long drying with a fan/heat for DAYS before you try to boot again..

Good Luck,

N.

I had a water damage experience last week that turned out successfully. The best thing going for you is the fact that it did not turn on. That would definitely fry everything. Open up the top case and dry it out for as long as you can be without it. Don't clean it with anything other than rubbing alcohol and be patient. I hope it works out for you, and hopefully you won't lose anything other than that nice Apple warranty.

You want 99% isopropyl - nothing less (has too much water in it to dry anything off!!). As long as you're in there you should probably remove the logic board so that you can dry UNDER IT! (If you do this you'll need thermal paste to reset the heat sink) AT LEAST unplug the MagSafe connector and the battery connector from the logic board (Careful removing these, don't pull on the wires they break off!) wiggle them at the connector with a small nonmetallic tool until they loosen (toothpick works in a pinch) same thing with the audio and thermal connectors.

With the battery & HD out and no power connected you can pour the alcohol over the logic board (NOT THE OPTICAL DRIVE). Also spray it with a non-corrosive ELECTRICAL CONTACT CLEANER. Use a toothbrush to work the contact cleaner into the two row of holes for the battery connector, and then lightly brush the connector pins (don't bend any). Next prop the unit up so that it drains well, and place it in front of a fan, Or in a trash bag on top of some desiccate material you can find (one guy substituted dry pasta to absorb moisture =8^0).

NB place it so that the desiccate won't stick to the inside of the unit.

Wait at least 72hrs.

Reassemble but do not secure the top case/keyboard in case you need to recheck connections.

Good Luck

My iPod nano was dropped into water. I dried it out and then charged it but now the battery life seems to have been shortened. Any advice
