Soda spilled on white Macbook keyboard

Reply by searking

So i spilled some soda (mountain dew) on my macbook's keyboard and i quickly turned it off, dried off the surface soda and flipped it upside down and tried to drain some of it off.

Once i had it dry on the outside, i turned it on and it worked fine, i went online and saw a video and everything until it just froze and told me to restart.

When i restarted, it made a weird loud beeping sound syncronized with the sleep light and after a while it went to the desktop but i decided to turn it off.

I turned it back on about 3 hours later and it worked fine again for about 5 to 7 minutes and then it asked me to turn it off.

I tried some trouble shooting cuz i coudln't find anything on the subject at apple.com and well nothings worked.

I recently, about 8 hours after the spill, turned it on again and it went through and i typed using all the keys on the keyboard and they all work perfectly. I was also able to open up pictures and even an external hard drive before it froze again.

Ive decided to just leave it off and turned upside down until tomorrow when i take it to the apple store.

In the meantime i was wondering if theres anything i can do to save my mac or should i just have someone open it up and clean the residue of the mountain dew. thx in advance

I had a similar experience with my Macbook 13" Unibody. I tried rebooting and it would hang up part way through the process. I would have to hold down the power button until it shut off. As I was on a road trip I could not do much other than placing it in a backpack in the back of my vehicle. I took it to the Apple store in Minneapolis to be told "yep it will have to be sent off for repair, likely cost $800".

Each day I tried to boot and it appeared to get somewhat further but still hung up. By day three I was home and able to take it apart and clean up the now almost solidified syrup. Inserted the OS recovery disk and reinstalled and recovered using my time machine backups. Almost 2 months now and things are working great. I suggest you give it a few days to dry out and see what happens.

Lesson learned... don't let kids use it to watch videos in the back seat when they have any liquids or food.

Good luck!

Water + electricity => shorts! Shorts can cause permanent damage!!

You should dismantle and clean with distilled water, to dissolve the sugar, then use contact cleaner/alcohol to drive off the H2O... blow dry or heat to accelerate drying but DON"T BE IN A RUSH!!!

IF THE keyboard/RAM chips slots are cleaned and DRY then you could be OK... but if you short out the RAM/Keyboard/MB by running current through a wet/damp unit you could kill it.

Good Luck,

N.

Three hours ago, I spilled coke on the keyboard of my macbook. I cleaned off the soda, and tried restarting it (the power cable was not connected at the time of the spill). It started but then shut off, and can hear the fan going for a few seconds before it shuts off. I'm leaving it drying upside down for now and will keep it that way.

Is it better to take it apart now, or should I let it dry completely? And if I have to take it get repaired, am I better off going to Apple, Geek Squad, or some other company? HELP! Thanks.

Ok so i was finally able to get my computer to work. so i left it off for a couple of days until i could find a screwdriver then i opened it up and cleaned off any residue i could see. When i turned it back on, it worked fine for like 20 minutes then failed me again. After that whenever i would try turning it on, it would make the start up chime but the screen would just stay black.

I took it to apple and i explained all the symptoms and all they told me was that I needed a new 500 dollar logic board...I was dissapointed in them because they didn't even try to consider anything else, they just told me that if its not turning on its cuz the logicboard is fried.

i wasn't gonna give up so i finally found a guy that I know that is good with computers and he took it off my hands and he returned it to me good as new and all he said was that one of my rams was messed up. That was it...a ram and he replaced it and now im using it to type this and it works fine (except for the keyboard being kinda sticky lol) but yea, and i even noticed that the sticker on the ram was wrinkly/damp but I couldn't find any residue on it so i didn't even consider it anymore, especially after what the apple people told me.

So yea um try cleaning it up i guess and let it dry and see if its working and if not, go find someone who might know more about computers, but be careful when handing your computer over to apple or best buy or something cuz they are gonna charge you alot and they may not even know what the problem is. ie. for me they were gonna charge me 800 bucks 500 for the logic board and 300 for the work and in the end i just paid 100 for the man to check it out and replace the ram.

Well Good Luck

Take it apart NOW! If you run current through a wet board you can short out parts!!!

Take the keyboard is off you can actually wash it (to remove the "sticky" which will eventually cause corrosion (shorting). Use warm water to dissolve & wash away the sugars, then use 99% denatured alcohol to remove the excess water, spray noncorrosive electrical contact cleaner.

Did you get liquid UNDER THE LOGICBOARD? It too can cause corrosion and shorting... you can completely dismantle the machine, soak up, sponge out, rinse off (your choice) the sugars, use alcohol and contact cleaner to drive off the water, then let dry REALLY WELL!!!

If you are not dismantling do not blow dry (you'll just spread the liquid around inside the machine). If you do dismantle you can blow dry, or dehumidify the parts with moving air, sealing with desiccants in a large trash bag or rubbermaid container.

DON"T BE IN A HURRY!!! 72+hrs drying will do wonders for your parts.

Good Luck!

Apologies on replying to an old thread. I'd just like to say thank you for the advice of Searking above. I too recently spilt some water on my MacBook. I thought I'd killed it. It wouldn't start up; it kept aborting with the loud beeping noise previously described. As Searking described that the problem with their MacBook was due to one of the Ram Modules being fried I decided to check mine out.

Low and behold one of the RAM modules was clearly showing signs of damage. As I had upgraded my Ram from 2GB to 4GB in the past I decided to see if replacing the damaged 2GB RAM modules with the old 1GB modules would allow my MacBook to boot up. It worked and I can now once again use my MacBook.

I've just ordered some replacement 2GB RAM modules which came to a total of £40 with next day shipping. I'm so glad I didn't have to take the MacBook into an Applestore as the nearest one is miles away. This thread has saved me a lot of time and money. If you are experiencing the kind of problems that this thread describes, always check your Ram Modules. If you don't know how to get at them, there are numerous tutorials/video tutorials on the web. Just search for 'replace macbook ram' in Google.

Thanks again.

I have an 'apple' aluminium keyboard with white keys.

Recently (with all the rain) it got leaked on from the ceiling.

Now a couple of the keys are not working.

How do I open it up to dry it out?
