Macbook: Replaced LCD with iFIXIT ... now NO brightness control

Reply by jaheyez

Hi,

I used the iFixit instructions to replace the LCD on my MACBOOK. The instructions were awesome and seemed to work great. Everything seemed to work fine, but I realized that the brightness control no longer works. What did I forget to connect? What should I do to enable the brightness control again?

Thanks iFixit community!

Eric

Does the brightness appear to be on the lowest setting and you can barely see images on the screen?

Actually the opposite ... its always on the brightest setting.

Thanks for the response.

Did you try to modify the brightness via the system preferences ?

I am having the exact same problem. Replaced the LCD on a macbook and everything is perfect except the brightness controls do not work. They don't even bring up the brightness overlay box that normally appears. Related to this is the fact that when going into sleep mode (either closing the lid or by the apple menu) the screen stays at full brightness and never dims. SMC and PRAM reset do not resolve the problem.

Guys did you reset the PRAM and SMC?

Ryan,

Check position of magnets behind the screen bezel for sleep problem... you can put a magnet on the edge of the topcase to see if it will sleep and about where the magnet in the display needs to be.

Hey Machead3,

From the content of the PRAM, it seemed like that wouldn't be related. However, resetting the SMC was an excellent suggestion. Although I don't think that worked either.

How do I know if I did it correctly? The computer is a macbook from about 2 years ago. I followed the process on the apple support site, power off, battery out, hold power button 5 seconds, battery in, power on .. but nothing seemed to happed and the issue didn't resolve.

I don't think there are any loose connections. There is no response from the brightness buttons on the keyboard and I can't find any brightness controls in the system preferences. What to do next?

Brightness would be on the bottom of Sys. Pref. ->Display if anyplace. 'Did you button up the display? I never do until I boot and check things.

Check the cables into both ends of the inverter, and on the back of the display, check to see that they aren't cocked at an angle and dropping a few pins. Same thing for any other connector you touched.

Other than that it might be your inverter?

Problem resolved. I was swapping the screen between a 1.8Ghz and 2.2 Ghz macbook. The 2.2Ghz is a "Santa Rosa" revision. Not sure of the model revision on the 1.8Ghz. I had just swapped my hard drive from the older unit to the newer. The older had OS X 10.4, the newer had 10.5. Putting the original hard drive with 10.5 back in immediately solved the problem. My problem was 100% software and the hardware is and was perfect. I am not aware of any concise guide as to what OS versions are compatible with what hardware but this would be a handy thing to have....
