iPhone 3GS logic board connector damage

Reply by bobgorila

So, I was following the teardown guide to transplant an iPhone 3G into a replacement back-case.

During the teardown I damaged the plastic shell around the number 3 ribbon cable connector on the logic board.

Now the phone will only boot up with the #3 cable disconnected, which of course means the home button (and presumably the proxy sensor and the light sensor? I have not tested) do not work.

With the cable connected the phone shows no signs of life whatsoever. It won't charge, or at least it does not give any indication that it charges, it isn't noted by any computer it's connected to, and the screen shows no signs of life - I can only imagine the damaged connector means something is shorting somewhere.

here is a photo of the offending connector - if you view at actual size you can see where the plastic was sheared off the connector and the pins beneath slightly bent.

Right now I figure my best hope is to try and maybe straighten the offending pins, or perhaps to remove complete, if they're pins I can do without - the light sensor, for example, wouldn't be missed.

Any ideas?

Addendum: sorry for the incorrect title - as the post suggests it is indeed a 3G that I've managed to damage.

how you managed to break that is amazing to me Ive broken down 3G's hundreds of times and this has never happened. But i DID it to one with a know issue and figured out how you can fix this.

You need to get a small piece if plastic and place and type of conducting metal. glue them together in the size of the break, the tear pictured above. get a little glue and place it over this, making sure that you dont get glue inside the ribbon enclosure. let it dry and place the lcd ribbon in and it will work.

While changing a broken screen, the #3 connector came out without the release being lifted. Now, the home button does not work. Help! I'm already missing my iphone..

that shouldnt have anything to do with the home button, they are not even connected in any way, the home button connects the the large back piece at the buttom of the screen. I do iphone repair in ebay and charge $30.00 to figure out what is wrong with the phone and then at the most $120.00 to fix it. If you take pictures and send them to my email "spcopsmac@yahoo.com" sounds like you may have bent something on accident. You have yo be very fragile while repairing the phone.

For everyone having problems soldering the new connector 3 onto the logic board so that the earpiece and proximity sensor will work again, just go to ebay and type in IPHONE CONNECTOR 3 REPAIR SERVICE there should be a listing for £39 including delivery anywhere in the UK or £8 extra delivery to worldwide destinations.
