Thanks for your reply. I forgot to update that I did get the iBook running. Turns out I had left a DVD in the drive and so was unable to insert the OSX install disk.

The iBook has now been running a few months with the new hard drive, maxed-out ram (1.25gB) and OSX 10.5 very smoothly. (I did the hack work-around for 10.5's minimum requirements.)
