MacBook Pro 15" DVD Drive After SL Upgrade

Reply by benfinan

Hey everyone. So I upgraded to Snow Leopard the day it was released (completely legitimate version), and it worked flawlessly. So far I have been incredibly impressed with the experience, other than that I CANNOT burn a DVD+R, DVD-R, or read a commercial DVD for the life of me. Here are my specs:

HL-DT-ST DVDRW GSA-S10N:

Firmware Revision: AP12

Interconnect: ATAPI

Burn Support: Yes (Apple Shipping Drive)

Cache: 2048 KB

Reads DVD: Yes

CD-Write: -R, -RW

DVD-Write: -R, -R DL, -RW, +R, +R DL, +RW

Write Strategies: CD-TAO, CD-SAO, CD-Raw, DVD-DAO

Media: To show the available burn speeds, insert a disc and choose View > Refresh

It is working perfectly to burn countless CDs and read/rip CDs as well, but it just pops out all DVDs or reports a "medium error" on all burns. There is a large Apple discussion thread on this: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa...

I know the drive is not broken as I honestly burned a DVD just before upgrading and it worked perfectly. Since the upgrade, 4 burning programs and 4 different kinds of DVDs will not combine to work. Any suggestions?

Ditto...Apple Genius wants to charge $300 plus to fix/repair the SuperDrive.

So you upgraded to the brand newest OS the day it came out and 'it worked flawlessly', (except it didn't, did it!) Did Apple thank you for being a BETA tester?

My advice; NEVER be the first to upgrade, especially an OS. I always wait for the first revision to an upgrade, to give them a chance to iron out the bugs that the first people to upgrade find...

Did you call Apple tech support?

Good luck.
