iBook G4 1.33 Mystery Problem

Reply by xande

This iBook started not recognizing the hard drive. Checking with disc utility came up with lots of problems. Changed hard drive by following ifixit helps. (Thanks for the great ifixit instructions.) New drive worked fine for a few days, then iBook could not recognize it any longer. Ran disc utility and found all sorts of errors. In the mean time the disc that was previously removed worked great as an external back up. Could find no problem with the removed disc outside of the iBook. This scenario repeated again with the new in place disc. When the new hard disc was replaced with the old, it worked fine outside the iBook. The old one that worked fine outside the iBook worked fine for a few days, then the iBook could not recognize it again. So took out the old disc and put back in the new one. The new one worked fine for a few days then, the computer could not recognize it any longer.

Here is what is odd, I have a cloned external disc that is now the start up disc running through the firewire 400 port and the iBook works just fine and continues to work fine. The iBook just will not recognize the new internal drive no matter what I do short of removing it and replacing it with a different one. I have switched out the internal drive several times. (I CAN ALMOST DO IT BLIND FOLDED) As soon as I take the internal drive out, it will work fine in the new surroundings (installed in an external case).

Before the iBook quits recognizing the internal drive I am able to run all the disc utilities, including the fsck and it will say at first that disc is fine after a bit of using the iBook the disc utilities begin to find problems. Mean while, the external startup disc connected through the firewire port continues to work without a hitch.

Does anyone have any ideas????

Thanks for any input on this MYSTERY.

Well, you're accessing the drive external/internal via usb and hd controller. So maybe something is wrong with the internal HD connection. Maybe it's the cable, maybe it's the controller circuitry on the main logic board.

Sorry, firewire for the external.

check how well its connected

How well it is connected is what concerns me. It is sort of a snap fit — wire within wire. Certainly seems there could be some minor misfit if a small wire gets bent, but how does one know without a totally new HD cable and connector to try.

And if one uses tape to attempt to secure the connection, how much taping can one do in the area. Seems limited. Any thought on this??

get a feel for how tight it is if its loose tighten it no dice HDD connector

It is not the connection to the HD, but the HD cable connector into the logic board that is what I am not sure of. It is a sort of mushy snap fit.

As for the cable connection to the HD, that is real straight forward, no problem with that.
