macbook reed switch(?) issues

Reply by humboldtcorrado

hi there,

i have a first-gen unibody macbook 2ghz. i came home from work a few weeks ago, and realized that the glass screen had a gnarly crack in it.

not wanting to pay $800 to apple for a new glass screen, i went onto ebay, and purchased a new one from thailand.

the screen came, and i thought everything went ok, but when i put it back together, my wifi no longer works, and the reed switch seems to be all screwy..

i can do a new wifi card no problem, but i just want to be sure it's dead before i spend some cash on a new one... any way i can test it? snow leopard is showing "no airport card installed". i've torn it back apart a few times to check it out, and the cable as well as the card both appear to be fine, and the cable seems to be seated correctly. any ideas? it worked before.

as far as the reed switch goes, i assume it's the problem. again, no issues before i took it apart... the magnet is still in the screen, as i can feel it when i run a screwdriver past where it should be installed. the reed switch itself triggers when i run a magnet over it (the machine falls asleep), but no matter what, wakes up as soon as it goes to sleep. either the magnet or closing the screen, it comes back awake, and goes into a continuous cycle of sleeping and waking up until i open the lid.

also, even more strange... when i shut the computer off, it turns itself back on (either battery or on the juice).

i know i screwed something up, but would anyone have any ideas as to what it could be? everything else is working fine, and my screen isn't cracked anymore. :)

thanks.

Maybe I can help a little bit...

Some weeks ago I spilled coffee over my MacBook A1278. After I dried it, the MacBook would start the boot process when switched on but then go immediately in sleep mode, before even the desktop showed.

By pressing the power button again it would start to wake up and then go to sleep again.

After some research I also concluded that there was a problem with the reed switch. It seems that the reed switch is located in the upper case near the right border of the case on the IR sensor ribbon cable (it sits right under the plastic retaining block that's embedded in the hard drive cable).

The components in question can be seen in step 30 of the A1278 upper case repair guide:

http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Repair/Insta...

In my case, reed switch itself was not the problem (no coffee got there), but it seems that some fluid got on the IR sensor ribbon cable socket and corroded the contacts on the cable.

After I removed the cable from its socket as described in Step 32 of the above repair guide, the the MacBook boots again!

It does of course not go to sleep when the lid is closed and there's no IR functionality. But I hope the find a replacement for the damaged cable (although it's not among the parts sold on ifixit...)

Hope this experience can be helpful!

Eric

Hi!

I am having the same problem.... I must have damaged the reed switch or the IR cable. Are they attached? If so have you found a replacement?

Hi,

no I have not found a replacement. I do not remember the details, but the IR cable is part of some bigger component. So my MacBook ended up with no IR and no reed switch as described above, but apart from that, it works fine.
