Aluminum Powerbook mystery

I have a 15", 1.67 lo-res model in excellent shape with a strange issue. It will run perfectly, forever, if I don't try to reboot, shut it down, or put it to sleep. If it's been on for over an hour and I try to do any of those things it will show a dark screen but you can see the desktop very faintly.

If I let it sit for about 45 minutes it fires back up and the display is fine.

By looking through the repair section here on ifixit, the dark screen is caused by the inverter, complete display or logic board. The problem seems to be heat related as it happens once it gets hot and then goes away once it cools down.

Do these symptoms point definitively to any one area? I don't want to start replacing parts until I know exactly what the problem is.

Thanks ahead of time for any help.

Unfortunately there's no way for us to narrow down your problem to a specific part, as multiple parts may be the culprit. Your best bet is to start by replacing the inverter and then moving on to other components if that doesn't solve the problem.

Thanks for the reply. I was able to find one for $20 so the risk is relatively low. Are there any detailed instructions for replacing the inverter on this site? I've searched and I can't find anything.

Did you try an external monitor to see if it does the same thing? Also if you go to Apple in the downloads section there is one called Hardware Monitor. You can download the free trial version that will give you basic temperature readings so you can see if it is going above limits.

I replaced the inverter and it's still doing it. I found a thread through Apple support discussing narcoleptic Powerbooks being caused by bad temp sensors on the keyboard. I removed the temp sensor and it still does it.

The CPU temps are getting up to 130+ and once they get in that range is when the problem starts up. Below that, it functions fine.

Would a new application of thermal paste prevent the cpu from getting so hot it shuts down? I think this is my last attempt to fix this.

I have the same unit. That is what fixed my freezing problem.

Notes on that would be, disconnecting the power cable from logic board was a pain and getting the board out of that top corner arggggggggg!

But it was so worth it. Good Luck!

I replaced the thermal paste and installed the G4 Fan Control application. These have helped to keep the temps down but it will still freeze up if I try to restart or put it to sleep after it's been running for a while.
