HELP: MacBook won't start after replacing RAM

Reply by DJAmal

Could someone please help me I have a white MacBook 2.0GHz Core2Duo late 2006 model. I got Snow Leopard installed on it the other day and with a new hard drive at my friend's place. When I got home I try installing new RAM on it, which are 2x1GB Corsair DDR2 200 pin 667MHz. According to apple it should work http://support.apple.com/kb/SP23 . I also tried going to their support page to try solve the problem and it has not yield any result http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1365 . I don't know what else to do. Thank you and please help.

What happens when you just put the old memory back in?

I've tried that and the laptop still wouldn't turn on. I mean that there is no sound or anything.

I didn't realise that I have two accounts here.

You said you replaced the hard drive. I assume that was successful and your laptop started up again and you then installed Snow Leopard.

Have you tried removing the battery, unplug from AC adapter. Then plug AC only and see if it will start?

Yes, the hard drive installation was successful. Then I installed snow leopard and it worked. Once snow leopard was working, I turn off the computer and replaced the RAM. After that it never turned on again.

I tried what you have suggested, but it still won't start up. Thank you for the suggestion and please keep them coming.

Have you tried it without any RAM installed?

Yes, but nothing happened. I tried it without the RAM and the battery just the AC adapter, I tried without RAM and AC adapter just the battery. I also tried with the AC adapter and battery but without the RAM, but it still won't work. What do you think it could be that is broken so that it won't turn on? Once again thank you and keep the suggestion coming

The last thing I would eliminate would be to pull the hard drive out and try to start the computer without it and see if it comes alive.

Thanks. It works but I don't exactly know how it worked. I just tried all sorts of configuration.

My macbook wont boot when I put ram in one of the slots, but when I take it out it will boot, I tried it with new ram and still doesn't work. I'm pretty sure it has something to do with that slot not the ram.

Can anyone help, has anyone had this problem

I'm having the same problem but didn't do anything with my hard drive. It won't boot with the AC or with a battery. If it boots without the RAM in it, then how does that help?

This happened after I tried to install the RAM my Macbook Pro uses to see whether I could use it in a MacBook. It wouldn't boot. So I put the old RAM back in and it still won't start.

Any more suggestions?

THE RAM SEATS REALLY HARD! Be sure the notch is on the correct side, and that the RAM "snaps" into the slots... if you remove the ram the cam lever should start with resistance...

Good Luck,

N.

OK thank you. I keep trying to really shove them in there (gently) but no luck. I hear you, though... I'm starting to think the Genius Bar is my next stop. Any other suggestions, y'all?

Did we cover you need MATCHING RAM (same Manuf, sometimes even the same batch #).

You can have RAM of different sizes, but they must be:

1 from the same Manufafacturer

2 same bus speed (e.g.5300) e.g. 1 crucial 2GB module and a 1GB module but both must be proper parity and speed.

im having the same problem im getting a folder with a question mark

Reply reply by machead3

? folder means no HD detected. Option boot and select it - if you can't see the HD it may have slipped off the bus and you just need to re-seat it.

Good Luck,

n

The HD and question mark has nothing to do with the RAM. The problem with my macbook is the motherboard, I asked an apple tech and they said that apple would just quote x amount for a new motherboard. So I just use it with one slot of 2gb and it runs fine =]

In most case you have to push the memory cards more firmly into the slots, please take a look at this video

you have to use real force.
