Replaced HD does NOT mount in iBook G4 12" 1 GHz

Reply by heyjosh

Hey all. I swapped out this iBook's original Hard Drive for a larger one I had in an old PB, 1 GHz Titanium DVI.

When placed into the iBook, the drive does not mount. I can boot from the OS Install CD/DVD but the replacement drive does mount, even in disk utilities.

The replacement drive works in an external inclosure, via USB, but its not available as a start up drive. (its a mirror of the original drive)

is there a switch or jumper that I need to set to enable this replacement drive to work with my iBook?

PLEASE HELP.

thanks in advance

I used SuperDuper! to clone the drive and it set up the drive for an easy swap. I used the trial version. Follow the directions from step 17 on.

If you start up holding the option key, does the drive show up?

This has happened to me too. I just replaced my HD in a 15" MacBook Pro Core Duo 2ghz 4gig RAM. I swapped the HD to a Western Digital Blue Scorpio 500gig after cloning the drive with Carbon Copy.

Both drives (original and cloned) are bootable when in external HD however NEITHER will mount when in the MacBook. All I get is the flashing ? Folder.

THe drives will not show up in Disk Utility and resetting PRAM has not worked.

From an afternoon searching my best guess is I have somehow damaged the HD cable or possibly even the logic board?

Like I said both drives are fine as both boot up via USB in a external HD enclosure so I'm not worried about losing data but this is driving me MAD!

Any other suggestions?

When I swapped out the HD in my wife's ibook G4, I wiggled the HD connector to the point that the end than connected to the motherboard disconnected. I listened for the drive to spin up and got nothing. I took the laptop apart again, reconnected the cable to the motherboard and it was fine.

Hi folks,

thanks for your responses.

The replacement drive is an exact copy - I used super duper. - and when placed into the iBook, the cable is firmly attached... the replacement drive works just fine in a UBS enclosure, but not in the computer. and yes when I use the option key when the drive is in the computer - it does read any other drive - not the replacement drive when its in the computer.

the whole thing is madding.

I figured it out. In my case I had slightly torn the ribbon cable connecting the HD to the Logic Board. It's a bit of a design flaw - the cable bends in two opposite directions and so when you take it off it's very easy to tear it which renders the HD useless when in the computer.

The drives work fine in external enclosures but not in the Mac - that is the reason why.

I bought a replacement cable from The Bookyard, which is a Mac parts specialist in the UK. They sent me a replacement overnight, i fitted it today and it worked immediately.

Happy days - hope that helps other folks with the same issue

Hey Pipmossop, glad to here your up and running. And again thanks to everyone who has responded. But I'm still perplexed. In my case:

- the original drive works in the computer

- the replacement drive is an exact copy of the original, I used my purchased copy of Super Duper!

- the replacement drive works in a drive enclosure.

- the replacement drive does NOT work in the computer, - Does NOT show up using the option key or using any disk recovery program - WHILE in the computer.

- placing back the original drive back into the computer, everything works fine... Computer boots normally, the replacement drive can be mounted when placed back into the enclosure.

There must be some kind of jumper switch or an issue with power from the computer or something that keeps the replacement drive from working in the computer.

Best

Josh
